Lucius, of: de ezel is een korte roman over een man die in een ezel verandert. In De gouden ezel, het meesterwerk van de Noord-Afrikaanse auteur Apuleius, wordt dit gegeven van de nodige diepgang voorzien. De auteur van Lucius, of: de ezel pakt het heel anders aan. Hij beschrijft Lucius’ beestachtige lotgevallen helemaal in de stijl van de pornografische en gewelddadige pulp fiction van zijn tijd, met slechts af en toe een knipoog naar de klassiek-Griekse literatuur. Karakterontwikkeling, bellettristisch vertoon en welluidende harmonie zijn ver te zoeken, en van morele verheffing is geen sprake. Exploitatie, dierenmishandeling en kinky seks zijn daarentegen aan de orde van de dag.
Zo geslaagd is zijn postmoderne verkenning van de grenzen van de goede smaak, dat de auteur er letterlijk in is opgegaan.

We kunnen niet meer achterhalen wie hij was (de Syrische performancekunstenaar en essayist Lucianus misschien?), en zijn roman staat te boek als niet meer dan een onsmakelijk stukje plagiaat. Hoog tijd voor een Nederlandse vertaling. Want dit is hét ‘klassieke’ boek voor deze eeuw: een eigenwijze, schokkende, afstotelijke maar uiterst leesbare voorloper van het werk van George Romero, David Lynch, Donald Barthelme en Kathy Acker.

I forget how primal the human condition is at times. 1800 years later and little has changed about what excites us, intrigues us or makes us read on in faux-disgust. Getting past the magical automations that fill our world I think the Greeks and Romans would be quite comfortable in the 21st century.

This is a much shorter and much less interesting telling of the story of "The Golden Ass" by Apuleius. Apuleius's book is a literary masterpiece; this one is really mediocre.

The Greeks never cease to amaze me! This was a short, fun story that was highly entertaining. It is easy to read and it is a funny way to start reading Ancient Greek Popular Literature.
