Etched in My Memory: My Life as a Shishalh Rememberer by xwu’p’a’lich Barbara Higgins is a gem of a book. I was drawn to it because I grew up in Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast and wanted to learn more about Shishalh culture and history. Higgins’ book is a particular treat because she also writes about growing up in Egmont, a tiny coastal fishing village where my dad cast more than a few lines for salmon and trout in the lakes and sea. Her descriptions of the area, namely the wild Skookumchuk Rapids, and learnings from her elders are woven with wisdom, detail and her personable voice. Higgins’ childhood fishing stories are a delight as she was a skilled and savvy young woman who wrestled more than a few sea creatures. She also, apparently, started the great Coast tradition of community hall dances – which continue to be a joy for all generations. Her trips to Vancouver with her grandparents, time teaching in Victoria and in the North also make for engaging and insightful personal stories. Barbara, thank you for sharing your stories.
