My Friend, My Hero, which celebrates its 25th year in print, is the first in the acclaimed, The Hero Book Series, by author Jerald LeVon Hoover.
Jerald LeVon Hoover became the published author of a Young Adult (YA) title, one of a few books targeted toward young Black and Brown boys ages 12 and up, “My Friend, My Hero”. This novella has become a staple, as recommended reading in elementary through high schools across the country and around the world. According to BlackBoard African-American Booksellers, that is a distinct honor Hoover shares with a short list of African American male YA authors including: Walter Dean Myers, Kevin Powell, Kwame Alexander, Ralph Burgess, and Jason Reynolds. “My Friend, My Hero”, the first of four in a four book series Hoover calls, ‘The Hero Book Series’ is celebrating its 25th Anniversary with a commemorative edition that includes an addendum of book discussion questions and now available; a full curriculum with a companion Student Success Guidebook, Teacher’s Guide, and Unit Assessments containing lesson plans. The goal is to promote Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in the classroom by providing strategies for students to make better choices and gain much needed confidence to support and unleash their inner greatness.
Hoover is an award winning author having written the four novellas of his acclaimed, The Hero Book Series with the word ‘hero’ within each title by design. “My Friend, My Hero”, “He Was My Hero, Too”, “A Hopeful Hero”, and “Hoop Hero” all have meaning. Hoover states, “Exposing Black and Brown children to a barrage of negative imagery and expecting their positive self-image to remain intact is ridiculous, insensitive, and unfair.”
Hoover then adds, “Young Black and Brown men and women are focused, gifted, driven, intelligent, and masterful at a host of other talents besides rap music and competitive sports; of which carries no shame, but we have other skill sets of significant influence. We are men and women of honor and integrity, regardless of whether we are born into poverty or wealth. But how can young Black and Brown men and women, or men and women of any race for that matter, define themselves and live up to their full potential if they only receive distorted representations?” Hoover asserts, “’My Friend, My Hero’ is intended for all youth, but I gave the spotlight to young, Black and Brown male and females because of the dire need to have access to more positive representations of themselves to which they can relate.” Hoover travels the country and abroad offering writing workshops for students, parent and family workshops as well as professional development for school staff.
“Mr. Hoover was an invited guest motivational speaker at the school. He spoke to students in grades 3 through 6. As an accomplished writer, author and speaker, he was able to capture the essential of what is takes to be an effective writer and reader. The manner in which he held the attention ofthe students was riveting.” --Dr. Tracie Thaim, EdD Principal, PS 9 Yonkers, NY
“Mr. Hoover showed excellent classroom management skills and developed a rapport with our scholars and staff. At the end of his 4-week speaking engagement, with three 8th grade classes, I had an ELA and Social Studies teacher request Mr. Hoover return with the sequel, “He Was My Hero Too.” Mr. Hoover made such an impact on our scholars, that we invited him back as our Keynote speaker at our 8th grade graduation in June 2017.” --Latisha Jackson - Parent Coordinator, Mott Hall IV Middle School
I recommend this to all my Junior High School teacher friends. Critical thinking nowadays is a must. This coming-of-age story is perfect for middle school. It's packed with life lessons that introduce the cause-and-effect relationship of actions and consequences. Sometimes the best intentions don't produce perfect results. Go figure.
My Friend, My Hero is a much-needed tale of friendship, brotherhood, other relationship dynamics, and positive influence. Black culture chides that 'it takes a village to raise a child.' Somehow, there so few stories of the results of being nurtured by village, when and how that child emerges, and how often that child returns, gives back and uplifts the community. The focus on sports superstars is most often on their talent, ability, wealth, and bling—rarely the struggle, sacrifices, personal responsibilities, commitment to excellence, drive, and restraint. And how often are these precious stories in books written about young black boys? Those within the nucleus of youth sports know the support system that needs to be in place to shape individual players into a team and drive that team to victory. My Friend, My Hero beautifully captures that dynamic with edge-of-the-seat intrigue, as the dangers Bennett faced, pop up one after the other. This is an excellent coming of age story for kids of any age, reminding us that some of our heroes are right at home.

I am delighted with My Friend, My Hero by Jerald L. Hoover. I think that this book will be useful and interesting both for teenagers, young people, and for adults too. This is a dramatic story about the difficulty of choice, especially if it is a very important life choice and this choice should be made by a teenager who lives in very difficult life circumstances. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who loves good, smart books with a great plot! I will definitely read other books by this author!!!
Choices! Choices! Choices! Choices are who we are. And this is the theme of the book. The story explores the life of an extremely talented basketball player, Bennett Wilson and the trouble he goes through life alongside his friend Kirby. The author goes on to show how life can change overnight and render someone powerless. I particularly enjoyed the protagonist, Bennett who was very relatable. As a young person, i am very familiar with some of the struggles Bennett experienced. The book ultimately teaches the struggle of being a role model and the strides made to maintain such a persona. Also, the theme of friendship is also explored. The importance of strong friendships is brought out so well with the author showing that friends should be ready to tell each other the truth. Friendship is about growth and people should be honest with each other. The author encourages and uses simple ways of teaching the audience. The book is short and has a simple flow that any young person can read. What i picked from the book, is to always be alert and try and make the best choices. I also learnt that my friends can either make or break me but ultimately that decision lies with me. An amazing piece of work by the author and I'd definitely recommend it 💯.
Thank you kindly to Jerald L Hoover and good reads for a copy of this brilliant book in exchange for an honest review. The first in a series of YA books by the author. A modern classic, I absolutely loved it. It’s an inspiring and important tale of friendship, loyalty, brotherhood, and a haunting glimpse at horrors that are close to home. A clear reminder of how quickly and how easily life can spiral off, and how determination and persistence can pay off. An equally important read for young adults and parents alike. I was interested to note questions for school discussion, I can’t think of a better place for this book to be. “Hang in there and fight. Be a winner! Dream! Don’t let anyone tell you it’s okay to do drugs because they do it. It’s not! Drugs make you do crazy things, and they kill. Drugs took away a good and very talented friend of mine. Drugs will win you over if you don’t fight against them.”
This depicts the value of friendship and brotherhood. It is a great inspirational novel in which we witness the hardships and constant trials in life. Bennett is a great man who just wants to offer the best for himself and his family. But circumstances came, troubles, downfalls yet he passed through all of it with faith, hard work, and his great support system. As young students, we can be inspired by all the vital thoughts narrated. It is a must to have a great support system because we face a lot of troubles without others knowing. Having someone who you trust and who will support you at your lowest is really life-changing. Surround yourself with the best people you knew. Those who have a positive outlook, someone who can share with you their mantras in life. Never let one’s death is just the only way for you to make you realize what you shouldn’t do.
In today’s world where all forms of challenges and madness attack you, it’s difficult to stand strong and steadfast. But, it’s not impossible! It’s just a matter of choosing the right people to surround you with. In Hoover’s book, My Friend, My Hero, two high school buddies prove that true friendship exists.
My Friend, My Hero falls under the Young Adult (YA) genre. But, its message is so powerful it qualifies as a recommended reading for elementary and high school students. Written by Jerald L. Hoover, the story revolves around Bennett Wilson. The lad is the eldest of three siblings. Their single mother struggles to raise them in a righteous manner. Bennett studies at Mount Vernon High School, an educational institution known for its athletic accomplishments. Specifically, the school excels in and produces a basketball star in the lad.
Bennett and Kirby: Their High School Life
The story of My Friend, My Hero begins with Kirby reminiscing his high school years with Bennett. He brings the readers into a flashback. Being Bennett’s best friend, Kirby recalls how their lives had been in 1972-1973.
The two friends live in the projects, go to the same school, and play on the same basketball team. But, their friendship is not smooth-sailing. Sometimes, they fight together and at other times, they fight each other. Notwithstanding, Kirby is always by Bennett’s side, especially during the latter’s difficult periods.
Bennett goes through challenging times. Threat of eviction, a mother feeling ill, losing a scholarship, and losing a friend are among his heavy burdens. He needs to do something to solve these problems. To worsen his situation, a very strong temptation gets in the way. Someone offers him an easy way to financial stability and wealth.
Will he or will he not succumb to the temptations? Follow Bennett’s life journey and find out how he faces all his challenges.
The Book and the Author of My Friend, My Hero
My Friend, My Hero is not just a typical novel. It’s a true-to-life depiction of what the real world is. Like most teenagers, Bennett faces many trials that come with this age bracket. Being impulsive and vulnerable to temptation, Bennett must choose between right and wrong.
I commend how the author presents Bennett’s situation. Jerald Hoover skillfully weaves his story to directly shoot his message across his target readers. His campaign against certain destructive activities is neither too aggressive nor too exacting. But, his message is very powerful.
Moreover, the author uses dialogues that are relatable to teenagers. His writing is simple and straightforward. My Friend, My Hero highlights values and morals students need to adapt.
What I like the most in this book is the strong support Bennett’s mother gives him. She says,
“The good Lord, all in His infinite wisdom, will test you with the things you love most, just to see how strong you are and how long you can endure.”
My Friend, My Hero: The Technical Side and Its Rating
Jerald Hoover makes sure that My Friend, My Hero is proofread well. I don’t see any major typographical or grammatical errors in the book. Of course, I don’t count the words used in the dialogues as errors. Those words are simply meant to enliven the conversations. Likewise, the author leaves no loose ends untied.
Overall, I give My Friend, My Hero a rating of 5 out of 5 stars, and I highly recommend it to readers and children 12 years old and above. I also suggest that teachers include this book as reference material for elementary school children and high school students. The book is also a good topic to talk about in organized youth discussion groups. There are a lot of things to learn from My Friend, My Hero.
‘My Friend, My Hero’ the first in Jerald L. Hoover’s four-part series of the Hero Book Series. It is a story mainly about friendship, growing up together, meeting life’s challenges and intrigues together. The essence of true friendship and what it can accomplish in a dark and dreary world that’s often filled with uncertainty, temptations, and varied choices. The book illustrates the love, support, guidance, uplifting, encouragement, motivation, daring, bettering, growth, fighting, defending, success, urging on, wise counsel, loyalty, protection.. that comes with true friendship. It also highlights growing, maturing, making good choices, overcoming, success, love, loyalty, faithfulness, strength of family, friendship, and good neighborliness, and faith in the midst of disappointments and discouragement. Summed up in these words from the book — "A true friend is a person who will stand by you no matter how heavy the burden is and do right by you."
Though it has a sad and disheartening ending, it is an interesting story that’s filled with twists and turns, surprises, thrills, energy, fun, some humorous moments, suspense, tension, and some action. It is a story that takes the reader through the journey with a mixture of thoughts and emotions. Making one eager to find out what happens next... and hence, unputdownable.
I like how the author takes the reader smoothly and flawlessly back and forth to the past and present and back again with ease. Enabling the reader to transition through the scenes effortlessly and enjoyably. The good storytelling skills come forth in the way the story is skillfully and interestingly written and told.
It is a book that’s not only interesting but also educative to all, and most especially for teens and young adults growing up in today’s world — in any part of the world. It certainly inspires and encourages one to be better, do better, think better, choose better, and see better. It’s a book I enjoyed reading and certainly deserves a 5-star rating. Great book with a powerful message to all!
Amazing, Highly-Inspirational! My Friend, My Hero, is not just a novel; it's the backstory with plenty of descriptions of the world we are in. This is a candid story about Friendship, positive influence and standing firmly for what is right. It’s an inspirational book touching one’s heart and soul which you can’t help re-reading. Mr Jerald Le Von Hoover delivers an account of what the young person is going through in the cruel world. The uncertainties they have to go through and their desire to make ends meet for a better living. The tale is not only entertaining but also enlightening. My Friend, My Hero, inspires young people to avoid the perils of drugs, making it a strong anti-drug and stay in school message. To keep away from crimes and not merely be a follower of the crowd but stand firmly in their beliefs and do what is right as drugs are the evil that plagues our society. Accepting ourselves, especially in the African- American community, is liberation from racial barriers. Young people, we can make a difference, don’t do drugs, and stay in school life and you will be somebody, it is a message enough for all young people. I highly recommend it!
I chose this because I was looking for a read that was short but sweet. Something that was light enough to read within an hour or two.
Early on, something that struck me about this story was its warmth and sincerity. I knew it wasn't a long story compared to some others, but nevertheless, a shorter story is still a story, and all stories should be told, written, or read. The whole time I was reading this, it seemed to me that the author/narrator spoke from the heart, and that this story meant a lot to them. So that warmth and sincerity I felt was something that touched me as a reader, from the beginning. The protagonist, Bennett, had a kind of spirit, a kind of determination that I admired.
I'm not a person who actively plays or follows sports, but I didn't feel this story was about sports. It was about bonds of friendship, young love, the kind of things that it warms your heart to think about.
Despite being a short read, there were moments in this story that made me smile, chuckle, and tugged at my heartstrings. If you want a light read that does these things, I think this book would be a good one to choose.
Novels and books addressing teenagers are more important and difficult than others because they carry more than one message. They are usually not fun and stimulating imagination, but to teach them how to find appropriate solutions when they are exposed to life-like situations. This is what the novelist and writer Jerald le Von hoover succeeded in his novell “My friend.. My hero.. It is through the story that he teaches you how to choose (the power of choices), and how to deal positively with life and its circumstances. It shows how to deal with your friends, colleagues in a positive and a good way. and focuses on themes such as love, friendship, trust. I really liked the simplicity of his style and the beautiful message conveyed. The book is suitable to be a textbook so that students can learn from it the values that we desperately need. I highly recommend for every one. I advice literary Club activities, such as the publication of books and the organizations of children's cultural dialogues to read my friend my hero. Sara slim
My Friend, My Hero resonated from the beginning. Bennett and Kirby are best friends. It is the perfect recipe to tell a story. Not many stories I come across explore friendship. Maybe they have been overlooked. Don't pass pm this one. The book has love on it too. Love for people, love for family, love for a classmate who had lost his way. Bennett is a high school basketball star. He falls in love. He eventually gets the girl. But there's conflict. She is spending a lot of time with her male study buddy. The other nuisance he faces is getting a job. When he gets this job it is less time for sleep. Also for less quality time with his girlfriend. He needs the work to help his mom with her financial struggles. He throws himself into facing his obstacles with grace. Tears are shed and that is another thing that has been missing in stories about male friendships. Please continue. You will find touching moments along the way.
Don't miss this true classic! The gift of the writer is the story, the gift of the reader is imagination. My Friend, My Hero brings story and imagination together in a masterful way. Jerald LeVon Hoover presents gripping tail in this fictional story that haunts us with issues that are all too real. Especially geared toward the often overlooked inner city youth, this work gives the audience access to seeing the world they live in from a safe distance. My Friend, My Hero presents us with many life lessons to explore in an engaging way.
I loved this book it was full of suspense and acualy spoke a stroy that can occur to any one i acualy go this book from mr.gerald hoover himself he might not rember me but he had a little group going at the school c.e.s.90 that i atteneded and he introuduced this book to me and at that age i didnt realy get the book but i recently to the time to read this book over and from then on i have been trying to get in touche with him
Absolutely fabulous. I was so drawn into each character and what they were going through. I could not put this book down. It was so vivid and colorful. It is a must read for any parent of a high school athlete because these things are so real in today’s world especially now. The way the author brought to life each character was amazing. A definite must read!
Great read!! As a former High School Afterschool Program Director, we reviewed this amazing book series with our students. With the series being depicted right in their own hometown of Mount Vernon, NY, the students were able to relate to the true-to-life circumstances and positively reflect on the similarities and hardships the main character had to overcome in order to succeed.
Thank you Booktasters and the author for this great book.
I would like to say, do not judge by the cover. The book content is very important and recommended for young people. I liked the concepts inspired by this book.
A must read for students! We need this book to be part of our schools curriculum. The content fits perfectly for ELA/Social Studies. Great resources for PBIS. MUST READ!
“And to all of you that are eighteen years old and younger. I’m not comin’ to you as a person of forty, thirty, or twenty. I’m eighteen years old. My advice to you is don’t resort to drugs. Don’t get mixed up with anybody or anything that can cost you your future, your life. If you don’t have one now, find a friend, a true friend. One that can and will help you along the way. If you can’t find one, learn to be a loner. That probably sounds hard to do, but don’t mess yourself up”
This book takes us through a realistic life of youngsters in America and how they have to navigate through life with temptations of drugs and violence. There are many reasons why people get involved with drugs, either using them or selling them. The book was such an eye opener on what most youngsters have to thrive and fight off in their homes, schools and streets.
Bennett was a star player and team captain at his school, he had scholarships and scouts lining up to take him on to college. He was a smart young man who had so much love for his school, friends and family (Mother, brother and sister). He is like any other kid, playful and fun loving, but he has also seen the damage drugs can do and so he was strongly vocal against them. He even had to strongly pull his best friend out of such messes when Kirby mixed with the wrong crowd.
“I guess some of the older folks will understand this better, but when you’re in a state of confusion and contemplating doing something wrong and dangerous, you really need the right kind of person by you. I don’t know how I would’ve made it without you, buddy, but thanks, Kirb. Thanks for bein, there, man.”
Bennett and Kirby’s friendship was beautiful to read about. They always called each other out when they are wrong, and they looked out for each other. Kirby always felt he owed Bennett a good deed because of how he saved him from going down the wrong road, and so he was always in the shadows looking out for Bennett. It was amazing how he got things going for him with Tara when Bennett was being slow.
Bennett was really against drugs and even when financial constraints and possibilities of losing his potential scholarships where present, he did not falter and fall into the tempting opportunities that were being presented by “Simon”. When he found that his mom was struggling, he offered to help and work nights even when it wasn’t conducive for him as a student and a player. He still had time to be a good brother and a son.
So many reasons were present for Bennett take up the offer of drugs, but luckily for him when it seemed too tempting, he had a friend (Kirby) who reminded him of the negatives and damages of going down that road. Bennett was kind to everyone and hope that everyone can change, the death of Stinky hit him hard because he had hope for him to change his life and not throw his life and talent away.
"Hang in there and fight. be a winner! Dream! Don't let anyone tell you it's okay to do drugs because they do it. It's not! Drugs make you do crazy things, and they kill. Drugs took away a good and very talented friend of mine. Drugs will win you over if you don't fight against them."
This was a very motivating book to read, especially when you look at Bennett’s outlook on life even in the drug filled community. The way he lived life with the positive and hopeful mindset that things will be better and never giving up was so nice to read about and remind you to have such an attitude towards life.
This book, I would recommend to the youth, faced with many challenges now so they can find motivation to stay on track and to find friends who are always going to be looking out for them.
An amazing story about friendship, family, values, principles, honesty and dignity. This book is about two friends, Bennett and Kirby. Kirby is seen reminiscing his high school days with Bennett. Bennett was a basketball superstar of his high school, who was loved by everyone and had a bright future ahead of him. But he has a lot going on in his life, where he is having a troubled relationship, his mother's illness and financial instability. He is tempted to resort to easy ways of earning money and substance abuse, but he restrains it all because of the person he is and with the support of his friend, Kirby. This story would be good for middle schoolers as it has many lessons which can be learned and applied in life when it gets difficult.
My friend, My hero is an essential story of friendship, fraternity, other dynamic relationships, and positive influence. It is about struggle, sacrifice, personal responsibility, commitment to excellence, determination, and restraint. This is a mature story for children of all ages, remembering that some of our heroes are at home. I was asked to choose one book out of ten to read and to write a review: I chose this book because its title fascinated me. Initially, I thought it would be for teenagers, but to my surprise, the messages conveyed in the story are beneficial for all age groups. It concerns everyone who reaches adulthood, regardless of where they are. This is a book that opens your eyes to the issues that prevail in society. Young people, particularly those from low-income families, are victims. Many try to escape the roads of drugs, gangs, etc. But some succumb to the pressure of a system structured against them. Only strong support from family, friends, and the environment can protect them from these evils. This book is a great read about love, friendship, loyalty, resilience, and self-esteem. It is supposed to be in all the classrooms and libraries.
This book brings a lot of good messages - friendship, brotherhood, hope, self-controlled, and empathy.
Bennet Wilson is a good young man. I truly admire how he managed to pass the hardships and trials in his life without involved in bad things. This book also shows the struggles and sacrifices of being a superstar athlete where usually shows the good side only - talent, famed, wealth.
Kirby is a good friend that deserves the world. Although sometimes I feel like the words that he used to comfort Bennet is quite harsh but he’s still a caring friend who always stays by Bennet’s side.
Kinda sad that a young soul passed away early in that age especially with the way he died? I know who did this to him (It’s the sketchy suspicious guy)
The plot, the characters all are nice but it feels like there are some plot holes in this book? Also, the time frame in every chapters/paragraphs are quite fast. But, don’t worry this is my opinion, you can read it to find out more
A sports story centered on parental unbringing and high school kids and about the game of basket ball and the basket ball court bringing in legal activities that could result from sporting activities and Sports law.The writer tells his story relating his personal family story to that of certain high school kids with similarities in the fight against drugs. In the story, we see the power of drugs;its control;its ability to suck out life and make one do crazy things and most of all the need for parents and children to win the fight against drugs. The books heroes are his father ;Stinky and the high school kid by name Bennett Wilson whose lives in the story encourages others in the fight against drugs ,sportsmanship and nurturing talents. We also see torts that are not actionable per se in injuries sustained in the play of sports due to certain contracts being brought to the fore.Team spirit and sharing in wins and losses is another aspect of the book. The difficulty in combining academic work and sports is also visited by the author and seen in Bennett's dropping performance. Also amongst the subjects touched is game/match fixing and pressure on players to lose games for money gains. We see in the book that not only do parents worry about their children upbringing but that they themselves also need help ,education and someone to console them
Thank you for recommending this read to me Booktasters, I read the sequel. It took me a bit longer to finish reading the books. I recommend this book for family or children/YA readers, it is about life principles and how to be there for our friends, and also it talks about black culture.
It is well written and well organized, the author is very talented in delivering great manners in a very simple reader-friendly way.
Thank you so much for allowing me to read and add my review for the sequel of the talented Mr.Jerald Levon Hoover. I recommend this book for all ages and I will keep writing this all the parts of the book because I think this book needs a place on your shelves to read it and to reread it again to consider the changes that happen to one's life and to the manners you need to plant in your self and in your children as well.
This was my first read for Mr. Jerry Hoover. You must select the sequel, it is a very well-written book you can read it with your son or with your daughter, about community, about what's happening in the neighborhood. about how to raise your children and make them have good deeds, about life lessons.... It is a must-read.
I truly enjoyed this emotional story up to the point that it broke me at times . When you see a character that you sympathize with , thats when memories come back and this beautiful story brought all of them back , Our main protagonist Bennett is a strong teenager . he is someone we should look up to . He is ready to help and doesn't quit even though he is caught up in between choosing his own passion that leads to a better future or helping his mother at present who's in a difficult situation and that is such a difficult choice to make . If I had to give my teen self an advice it would be read " My friend , My hero " For it's beautiful message and inspiring lessons of true love in any form , selflessness , courage and etc .
