Within fateful hours, she was homeless and an orphan.
“Time stood still. ‘If my parents are right about God, then I’m doomed.’ She rolled over, but her thoughts stayed with her.”
Fourteen-year-old Louise Stella flees into the forest to escape an intruder who would take her hostage. But by the time she returns to her house, her country has broken out in war and her home island has become a military base. Sharing the land with enemy soldiers, Louise’s only goal is to stay alive one day at a time. Having no food or water, and little knowledge of how to survive in the forests of Quebec, her biggest adversary is “the Unknown”. Her pride crumbles and she realizes that she can’t sustain herself. She must depend on someone else... but Who?
Isolated is a Young Adult suspense novella with uncertainty lurking at every turn. It will have you asking the big questions about life and death. Will you come to the same conclusion as Louise?
This story was wonderful and well-written!! I loved getting to know Louise and journeying with her as she fought to survive. Before I dive any further, here are the things you should know:
Content: -Language: N/A -Romance: N/A -Violence: this would be the thing I would caution you on. As this is a story with war going on, there are many severe wounds, dead bodies, and people held captive. -Blood/Gore: lots of blood mentioned and bloody wounds. I would caution you if you're sensitive to talk about blood/injuries.
A few things I found a little unbelievable (i.e. Louise suddenly accepting God while she had denied Him over and over again, how a tree limb fell just when she needed it, etc.) I also found a few errors in the editing, which is understandable. :) I decided to rate this one a fair 4 stars.
I really connected with Louise after reading this one and can't wait to start the next one!!
Thanks to Jordy for giving me a review copy. Great job!!!
A couple of months ago I read In Too Deep by Lynn Blackburn (my first suspense novel I’ve read in at least five years) and I loved it SO much, so I was really looking forward to reading another suspense novel. I decided to pick up Isolated and I’m glad to say that it was super enjoyable to read! A couple of things that I really loved that I would like to point out... For one, I really liked how the whole story took place in a short amount of time-yet the book itself was quite long. I really enjoyed seeing Jordy‘s talent in that she paces her stories extremely well and her writing style flows and just works well with the whole suspense thing she has going on. Secondly, the story itself works really well as a suspense novel. The plot is extremely engaging and I definitely was not bored at all while reading. The main character had issues regarding the faith that I could definitely relate to and I absolutely loved seeing how she overcame her struggles realistically in the end.
That being said, not all of the story was very realistic. Some of the plot scenes seemed extremely staged and waaaayyyyy too convenient, which I found annoying at times. However, that was pretty much the only issue I had with Isolated.
Overall, I liked this book! It’s definitely not one of those books that I will wildly fangirl over and it’s not a book I love, but it’s certainly one I’d recommend to lovers of suspense and one that I’d reread. 4 stars
Hmmm... I'm a bit conflicted on this one. I love survival stories, but I just had a really hard time connecting with the style (which is definitely a personal preference). Some of the metaphors left me confused and unsure of what picture I was supposed to be taking away from them. Also, I still don't understand much of what's going on outside of Louise's immediate need for survival. What is this war about? Who are all the different people she's run into? Why did certain things happen the way they did? I realize there's been no way for her to find out most of this, but the complete blank as far as what's going on and the fact that I don't really understand how she's managed to survive and not be found so far make it kind of hard to understand just what's at stake here. (And I'm still trying to figure out what the wolf in her dream has to do with anything.)
However, I really liked the consistency with which Louise's desire to control her own life was portrayed and the way it factored into her different decisions and struggles. It definitely made the necessity of being brought to the absolute end of herself before she would surrender to God seem very real. Her personality is very different from mine, so I didn't necessarily relate to her, but I understood a lot of her decisions.
Overall, the story was interesting and the message was good, even if I didn't quite connect with the style. And with the way things ended in this book, I will probably continue the series, if just to find out what happens next. :)
I received a free copy of this book from Stellae Books. A positive review was not required. All opinions are my own.
Content--war-related action, including gunplay and bombings; a girl is kidnapped, held at knife-point, and shot at; mentions of blood, wounds, dead bodies, and vomiting (not very graphic); mentions of suicidal thoughts
I read this book in a couple hours -- it was wonderful! This was my first time reading something by Jordy Leigh, and I must say, I am definitely looking forward to reading the second book in this series.
This book begins with a suspenseful scene. The main character is almost kidnapped. And from there, the pace never slows down. It was engaging, interesting, and kept you wondering what was going to happen next. And the ending.....be warned that you pretty much *need* the second book to continue the story =)
What I enjoyed most about this book was the journey Louise was brought on and her growth as a character. When the story starts, she seems slightly self absorbed. Not much, but slightly. Instead of paying attention to her mother, she'd rather be reading. Instead of being outside, or swimming with her sister, she'd rather be reading. In fact, when the book opens, she is by herself while her family is somewhere else. Slowly, it's revealed that she's not even sure there really is a God. She can walk the walk and talk the talk, because her parents have trained her well. But she herself needs to find a personal faith in the Lord.
As the story goes on, it becomes apparent that the only way the Lord would save her would be to bring her to the end of herself and show her there's nothing without Him.
The conversion scene was beautifully done -- I was crying. (So, yes, I'm a sentimental, emotional reader!) I loved how she immediately had an attitude change, and how everything just didn't all of a sudden become better just because she "prayed a prayer".
This was a wonderful read, and I wholeheartedly gave it four stars. I would heartily recommend this to anyone who enjoyed suspense, survival, and a fast-paced storyline. Despite the mentions of death, blood, and wounds, I would easily let my younger brothers (aged 9 and 10) read this.
*I received a copy of this book from Stellae Books in exchange for my opinion. I was not required to enjoy this book, just to leave an honest review*
This is going to be a fairly short review as it was a fairly short story, and I’ve waited far too long to review it. As you know, I originally talked about it during the blog tour, and I meant to review it shortly after, but … *coughs* Oh, well.
Isolated is an intense, content-packed book. It’s very thrilling and leaves you with a sense of imminent danger as well as containing an important message.
Isolated fulfilled both my need for excitement … and my need for a book with an actual meaning (especially as I tend to read a lot of “fluff”). I also identified with the main character – raised in a Christian family, but needing to find a personal faith of her own.
I was a little irritated with Louise’s stubbornness, but only because I see it so strongly reflected in myself (meet the girl who would do anything rather than give in), and that was just annoying. Because reading about yourself is infuriating.
However, it was an amazing story nonetheless. I’d recommend it to any Christian teen looking for an intense story with an even more intense message.
Isolated is such a beautiful story of salvation coming out of the most unexpected events and to the most unexpected people! Daring escapes, close calls, survival, finding meaning in life, it's all packed into this amazing book! Follow Louise as she gets mysteriously kidnapped, makes a quick escape, but is now stranded in the Canadian forest. Does she know enough survival skills to survive? Does God really care about her enough to keep her alive? Is there really a God at all? Is her family alive? Find out when you read Isolated!
Jordy is such a wonderful young author and displays great talent in her writing!
Jordy had my attention from the beginning She has learned the skill of drawing the reader into the next chapter. The book seemed to end abruptly leaving me with unanswered questions. That makes me want to read book 2.
