"Unschooling Works!!!" was written to share the intimate details of one family's unschooling/homeschooling journey. This book is dedicated to the millions of families that are choosing to not send their children to traditional school and are taking the responsibility on their selves and to the millions more considering the change. Each unschooled child will have a different “program” to follow, one based on their personal desires. Though the inspiration to give the child this level of freedom is what created this book. Our current world knows few free humans, living to create their personal truth. Self-directed learning provides a foundation for doing just that.
At least, it didn't work for me. It's too experience-based and not at all research-based. I like to read about people's experiences, but not have the whole book be about that. At first I thought it was nice that the book had chapters dedicated to specific age ranges, but then it stopped at 5-7 years old because that's the most experience the author had when she wrote this book. Honestly, it came to a point where I thought about quitting and returning the book, but I pushed through. It's just a little over 70 pages, so I finished it fairly quickly.
She also talked way too much about her personal life and not enough about their actual unschooling journey. She seemed to focus more on the before conception phase and on nutrition, plus even a tidbit about her relationship with the children's father going south. If you want to share that, do it on social media or on your blog and NOT in a book about unschooling. I don't care about your personal life.
I do NOT recommend this book. If you want to read a book about unschooling, read anything by Pam Laricchia instead. You could also read John Holt's books, but I found them a little dry.
I could’ve highlighted the entire book. Full of concise wisdom. I love how she wraps it all up by saying, “Learning CANNOT be controlled.” And there it is.
