Truth for Today Commentary: 1 Corinthians

Rate this book
Why study 1 Corinthians? Paul addressed the multiple struggles affecting the first-century church in Corinth. Division and immorality plagued this congregation.
Paul knew many in the church and loved them devotedly. Therefore, he wrote to rebuke, to correct, and to challenge them to greater godliness and unity. Those who had come out of the idolatry that was pervasive in ancient Corinth were having trouble leaving behind some of their pagan customs. Brethren were failing to resolve personal differences in a godly way. Questions about marriage, divorce, and remarriage had confused the church. Individuals with certain spiritual gifts considered themselves superior to others, and the Christians wondered what to expect at the end time.
The church today struggles with many of the same questions Paul answered in this letter. Above all, the remedy to conflicts is Christlike love, which Paul defined, described, and demonstrated. He urged the Corinthians to live according to godly principles rather than human wisdom.
