Baal rules Seraphina. Atlantis is in his cross-hairs.
Thanks to Conrad Edison, Justin and gang can finally get back to Eden and raise an army to fight Baal. More importantly, Shelton can get a much-needed taco.
But the Overworld lies in ruins after Victus's civil war tore it apart. Even worse, an anti-supernatural nom organization is systematically hunting down supers and taking over Obsidian Arch waystations.
Justin and gang are running out of time to fight off the noms and restore order. Because another doomsday clock is ticking—one in which either Baal rules the realms, or the rogue Apocryphan, Xanomiel, recombines the realms into one Earth and kills billions.
Though I still enjoyed this book every bit as much as the previous in the series, and still give it high marks for a great story, I have a few gripes with this book and the previous one. My main problem is with Shelton and Elyssa. In this book, Elyssa seemed to make way way more mistakes than she had in previous novels. It’s like she suffered major brain damage while in Utopia, or she let all that adoration go to her head and now she thinks she can do no wrong. She seems a lot more arrogant than before. I mean, come on Elyssa, hovering a jumbo jet in the middle of Hyde Park? Why the hell were tocos so important that you couldn’t take ten minutes to explain to a fae from another world that she shouldn’t use magic in public. These are the things that she would have thought about in previous books. And yet, now she is oblivious to obvious dangers? Doesn’t make sense. Definitely not the so-called military mastermind of previous books. But even worse than her, Shelton is almost unbearable in these last two books. He used to be a lovable sarcastic asshole. But how he is just a compete asshole with no redeeming qualities anymore, his constant jibes at Bliss and Cinder made me hate him. He had an excellent arc in Insidious Insurrection, he hit rock bottom, feeling useless in the civil war, and finally overcame that at the end of the book. That should have been a moment for him to grow as a person. Instead he regressed and became far less considerate of anyone, even his supposed friends. It’s like all of the developments from 15 books was just thrown out the window. I’m honestly hoping that he kicks the bucket or runs away like a coward and waits for the end like Bella wants to, abandoning their friends. Maybe he’s actually an Infernus. Maybe Elyssa is too.
Apart for that, I love that Conrad and gang are finally teaming up with the Eden Corps. Took a little too long to earn respect from the rest of the team, but still.
Max and Conrad are so much fun. The way they idealize Shelton warms my heart. They are young but hold their own. This story was a little heartbreaking and a lot of hilarious. Omg! John Corwin must have been the class clown. Each time I read/listen to a new book he blows my mind. The characters, the battles, the magic and the humor all blended together making this series never boring. Austin Rising is a fantastic voice actor who absolutely brings these characters to life. I highly recommend this book/series!!
Justin and company are in a fight to retake Eden. UT they are up against something they haven't seen before. Something has changed in the years they've been away. The noms know about the supernatural beings and have the technology to render magic harmless. Someone is behind all these changes, but who? This series has picked up steam again and is barreling right along. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Never a dull moment in this series or any of Corbin’s books. Great storyline. Strong characters that jump off the page. Love that Justin and Conrad are now part of same book
As with every book the characters continue to develop and you find yourself rooting to destroy the bad guys. I love how well thought out all the different characters are and the different worlds are and I eagerly await the next book :)
How he can juggle so many people with different characters and locations and transitions… My mind is boggled by every book in the series. Do yourself a favor and begin at the beginning.
