This is probably one of the worst technical books I have read. Instead of concentrating on general mechanical principles the authors go on and on with Manufacturer Specific Information (MAI), then, after pages upon pages of MAI they say something like "some manufacturers may have different" specifications, procedures... - "always refer to the maintenance manual." Really? Then why did you just make me read all this information for.
The book is huge and packed with pages of unnecessary information. It serves better purpose as a booster seat.
The chapter on hydraulics covers a multitude of hydraulic pumps, how they work, each component within the pump - unnecessary for the beginning mechanics student. It's not the only chapter like this, almost all of the chapters have information unnecessary for beginning students (which is the target audience of this book).
Considering it's size you would assume it had engine fundamentals, emissions, fuel system. Well it doesn't. That's a completely different book that'll run you another couple hundred dollars.
My pet peeve: Current is already defined as electron flow, Current flow is technically incorrect.
I've been a transportation mechanic for eight year and I'm always looking to build my knowledge base so I read different technical books and find this book to be unnecessary and possibly discouraging for the beginning mechanic. There are better books out there that concentrate primarily on mechanical fundamentals. This book bypasses these fundamentals and plungeds the student into overly technical information.
It's because of books like these, and technical schools that push them that we see so much incompetence in the mechanical repair industry. If they concentrate on the fundamentals and build a solid knowledge base from the beginning we would have better prepared mechanics.
