This book is amazing!!!

I have three boys, 14, 12, and 8. My 12 year old has autism and only wish this book has been around years ago when my older two were smaller. I do plan to read it to my 8 year old too.

While I totally understand and appreciate how this book sympathizes with Brennan -- I mean, that's why I picked up the book, as a possible resource for a child whose sibling is autistic -- I didn't like a few things about it. First, the cover art is appalling. It screams the message that having an autistic sibling is miserable. Yes, I know the book is "by" a seven-year-old boy (uh huh) but adults made the decision to put a sad-faced child on the cover. Am I asking for toxic positivity? No! But maybe a more thoughtful visual message?

My primary disappointment in this book is that it doesn't really do what I hoped it would do. I feel like this book is written for adults to try to get them to understand how it feels to have an autistic sibling... and I'm not really sure that any adults need that lesson. I was hoping for something that would speak to my own six-year-old boy, and I feel like this missed the mark.

That said, it could have been a lot worse. The actual text of the book is fairly balanced in sharing both good and bad times. There were pages of the book that I could definitely see myself sharing with my son. I especially liked how it talked about emotional regulation and overstimulation, and about how frustrating and even traumatic that could be for a small child. I also liked how it talked about the two brothers having different sets of rules, and how it was hard to rationalize that sometimes.

In short, this isn't the book I was hoping for, but I don't completely hate it, and I can see how it could be a valuable resource for some readers. I'm also sure that it was a wonderful bonding experience for the author and his mom to create it together, and hopefully helped Brennan process some of his feelings!

a very realistic perspective

I really enjoyed this read and enjoyed reading it to my child. There was a lot we could relate to. And I loved how sweet it was even though the topic is hard, I would highly recommend.
