4.5 Stars! “This is the universe. A swirling, never-ending, wonderful mystery...How could anyone not want to explore it?” A young spoiled, reckless man, son of one of the wealthiest and prominent noble Imperial families, dreams of only flying and see the worlds, be free. An unsuspecting turn of events, least expected twists, an excellent in-depth of characters, the strict academy life, all throbbing into a finale crescendo. Great world building. A lesson of Humility for Humanity. I’m certainly going to follow up the whole series! I received an early version of this book from the publisher and my review is entirely voluntary.
This is the first book I have read by these authors, so obviously the first I have read in the series (though this stands alone as well). It was a good introduction to me for both the series and its creators (thanks, Dave and Shannon).
This was a fairly quick but enjoyable read. I liked the variety of beings (human and otherwise). I would have liked more detail about the various aliens and their backgrounds, but that was not the purpose of this book, so it was okay not to be included. Eliard starts, in this book, to realize how politics, negotiations, and other boring junk, actually can be life-or-death important. "Starts" being the key-word. He has a long way to go. I look forward to reading through more of this series. I received a free copy but am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
At first I thought that I would not like this book because of the attitude of the main character But as I got farther along into the book, I changed my mind. Eliard proved to be resourceful and daring and not suited to be just another recruit in the Trevalyn Academy. I have already read the first book of this series, and I am very glad that I decided to buy this prequel. I am looking forward to reading more of this series.
Eliard the son of a Major house has problems with respondsibility. His father sends him to the Trevalyn Academy to try and reform him . However ; due to a debt to a Duergar names Rummer which he had to pay off or his family would be advised. He tries to leave the Academy after the head of the Academy is killed by a rival company. A typical blackmail Situation. The plot is interesting and the Story of an irresponsible youth could apply to any of us.
This one has a taste of Lois McMaster Bujold in it. I can just see Miles in the middle of this plot, and working to unravel it, though I conceed Miles would not have taken this approach to be sure. In any case, if you like scifi mystery stories, this one might do the trick, though there's more generic in this than mystery, it's still a good story, and if you're looking for something to pass the time during a trip or a lazy afternoon, this one could certainly do the job.
I greatly enjoyed this coming of age tale. Eliard Martin is a 19 year old spoiled brat who cares for nothing and nobody except his desire to fly fast and high. Predictably, he gets sent to a military academy where .. well, let’s just say it doesn’t turn out the way you expect!
An enjoyable story which turns out to be a prequel. It is a disservice to the authors readers to not more clearly identify this book as such so it can be read first.
A young man of a noble house wanting to go his own way. He is cocky and reckless, and loves to fly. This is a fast-paced and action-packed story with some surprises. James David Victor weaves his story to keep you interested in finding out what will happen next. I think you will enjoy this book. Happy reading!
I read this book after reading book one, Mercury Blade. I think this prologue of sorts, gives excellent insight and great backstory to the main character, Eliard, in his younger years before the start of the Valyien series. There’s plenty of action, but there’s some tough experiences Eliard is put through. In all though, it’s a good read and one I would suggest reading if you want more after reading the series.
Trevalyn Academy is a standalone novella to be read before or after the Valyien series.
