Start Your Own Coaching Business
2012
Monroe Mann Revised by Rich Mintzer

Let’s go a quick overview of this book:

1. The good: If you have never had a coaching, advisory or consulting business this book will be useful.
2. The bad: if you have had a business described in 1) this book is repetitive, and at times juvenile.
3. The conclusion: parts were redundant but it was clear that I did not want a coaching business as described in this book, however a coaching network as implied in this book could be very interesting.
Overview
5. You need to be that ‘first mover’ that Aristotle talks about; that force that inspires motion in others. You need to be the inspiration for your clients.
>>>While we don’t agree, it is his perspective
10: The difference between consulting and motivational coach
• Consultant tells you what books to read
• Coach explains the material
• Motivational coach grabs you by the shoulder and directs you to your goals and then starts pushing you
• >>>our approach would be more to explain how it fits into your goals and system we help develop and let you do what you need to do
12: I am giving advice from what I learned from my own successful experiences
14: …client relationship has to work both ways
15: Coaching at its core is rather simple. You do the following
• Ask probing questions to get to the heart of the matter
• Listen to what the clients have to say
• Empathize with their situation, and
• Guide them firmly forward
16: Review everything
• Attitude
• Projects
• Finances
• Marketing
• Strategy
• >>> do a 4 quadrant coaching matrix: finance, marketing, development, success
• >>>SOS it
LV~ The rates described in this book do not allow for a business but rather a ‘job’
22: Training to be a coach
23: Their goals, not yours
26: KYC – Know your clients
31: Chapter 4: First steps Setting up your business
• Name
37: Chapter 5: Choosing a target market
45: Setting up your office
>>>phone, website or Facebook page; squeeze page; email list; online payment system; business card
C7: Finding your first clients – start part time
• Word out
• Referrals

C8: Deciding how much to charge
• >>>Developed a model on how to charge $35 per hour with the potential to make $500 per hour
• >>>i.e.: 5% of 10M is 500K / 1000 hours = 500/hour
61: Create coaching packages
63: Keeping it simple
70: (Analysis of Financial Statements) provide you with the right questions

79: Chapter 11: Improve your offerings

What a refreshing read! Not only was this a solid book for those interested in coaching, it contained a great deal of general wisdom for those starting a 1 person business in the training, healing arts or health services industries. I have recently read a handful of books on how to begin a practice and find myself gravitating to those who recognize (and prepare me for) challenges without trying to flood me with pessimism thinly disguised as realism. The topics that stood out the most to me included the basics of book keeping, how to develop a sturdy initial structure that will also support later growth, and the importance of developing a supportive community to see you through. Those who have a solid background in business may not find these topics useful, but I was relieved to find an encouraging, directive book made for a completely green entrepreneur. Like many people, I decided to go this route after tons of training and experience with providing my services but none for running a business.

As with the practice of coaching, this book is intended to be a partner and guide without micro-managing. Those who are seeking a thick book full of hands-on, step by step exercises will be disappointed. My goal was to read something that would give me an idea of the basic directions to research, with tips on my approach and lots of resources for further learning. This book succeeded well in fitting my needs, while remaining easy to read, thanks to lots of bullet points and subheadings. In fact, I finished the whole thing in about two days.

This is not a stand alone book, and it doesn't pretend to be. Instead, it will help you to continue to develop the skills you need by offering suggested reading, websites and contact information. I'm the type of person that likes to have a map, but prefers to explore the sites myself, so this was a good match for me.
