Eighteen million dollars has been embezzled from Continental Industrial. Unbeknownst to Nicholas Powlowski, the Cost Accounting Manager, he is the prime suspect. The Company hopes that an undisclosed review of its records, and a watchful eye on Nick, will provide evidence leading to his conviction, as well as discovery of co-conspirators and recovery of the stolen money.
After 20 sheltered years caring for his widowed, immigrant mother, in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen, 42-year old Nick’s experiences have not prepared him for what he’ll encounter as he embarks on an attempt to make up for lost time and reclaim his life. Humorously grumpy Nick finds a confidant in Lanette Carlson, an earthy, vivacious young girl who left Kansas for the lure of the fashion world, and works as a stripper. Lanette has a strong will to succeed, but she often succumbs to the manipulation of her domineering family.
When Nick discovers a secret family fortune, he begins living an extravagant life that includes sexual escapades with a variety of women, which increases suspicion of him as the mastermind behind the embezzlement. During this period, Nick begins to overcome his lack of social skills to live the life he’s regretted missing; but his new uninhibited life isn’t bringing him happiness.
As the FBI closes in to make an arrest, Nick is desperate to find out who is framing him, and why. He enlists the help of a powerful underworld figure with the connections to obtain inside information. But will the price of what Nick is about to discover be too costly, and in more ways than one?
“Return to Go is a psychological portrait, colored with lust, exploitation, and enigmatic friendships; and painted with broad strokes of humor over a canvass of corruption and deceit.”
What makes this book such a success is that the characters are so engaging. We meet Nicholas on the first page, riding in an ambulance with his mother. She doesn’t make it and he becomes a sympathetic figure. But as he prepares for and attends her funeral. we switch scenes to his place of work where his employers suspect he may have embezzled almost 20 million dollars. While it seems his employers have a good case against him, he seems to be an honorable and honest person when the narrative focuses on him that it’s hard to believe. As the story goes on we meet several women he is involved with in varying degrees. His dealings with some of them bring his character into question and the suspicions of his employers seem less unlikely. He has put his life on hold for 20 years caring for his ailing mother. Now that she is gone, he focuses on the things he’s missed. He has a good platonic female friend, half his age, that eventually moves in with him due to problems at home. Both he and her have ner-do-well brothers that show up and exacerbate their troubles. No spoiler here. If you want to know if he “done” it, you’ll have to read the book for yourself. But it’s a good read.
There is a lot going on plot-wise in this novel, but it all lays on the shoulders of main character, Nick. The novel is written in the way in which everything relies on the fact that the reader must find Nick believable or it all just falls apart. Luckily, I was able to easily identify with him and his struggles, even though nothing remotely similar ever happened to me. I won't go into details about the plot here, you have blurbs for that, but it has money embezzlement, FBI, hiding and running, colorful characters, stripper, a whole range of entertaining stuff along the way. Nick works as a hero because he is not perfect, not super strong or super smart and he has a good arc from beginning to the end. Writing is also on point, good and skillful sentence structure and conveying emotions, but also tense scenes where you have a sense that something really important is at stake. Basically, I loved it, it is not perfect and if you happen not to like the main hero it won't be as good for you, but for me it was great fun and very enjoyable.
Return To Go by Mitchell Graye is the second book I’ve read by Mitchell Graye and much like The Sheep Rise up, Graye managed to keep me turning pages and trying to guess what’s going to happen next. The characters are just as brilliantly created and depicted as they were in The Sheep Rise Up. I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline, and found myself relating to the characters and some of their trials that they must overcome. The story follows Nicholas and his neighbor Lanette, Nicholas is accused of embezzling millions of dollars from his company and Lanette is a poor college student as their relationship grows complicated and Nicholas works to clear his name of any wrongdoing. There’s so many emotions that run through this book! Add the humor and mystery sprinkled throughout and you really have the perfect book! Mitchell Graye definitely has a new fan, I’ll be reading anything I see from him now!
Author Mitchell Graye writes a suspenseful story that tells the tale of Nicholas Powlowski, a cost accounting manager at Continental Industrial. Powlowski is the main suspect when millions of dollars suddenly start to go missing in the company which causes them to watch him closely in order to catch him in the act. Along the way, they find that he has had a rather intriguing past. He has befriended many people after overcoming his sheltered life and uses his newly found fortune to pay for his rather risqué feats. Powlowski believes it is someone he once knew who is trying to frame him, but he must find out quickly who it is before it’s too late. If you’re a fan of suspense, thrillers, and psychological novels, you’ll definitely want to read this book. It’s filled with incredible twists and turns that will leave you astonished. The book is about 320 pages long, so you’ll need to invest some time in it, but it’s worthwhile thanks to the incredible plot Graye has come up with.
When millions of dollars go missing from Continental Industries, Nicholas Powlowski is framed for the deed. Under investigation of the company as well as the FBI, Nick tries to stay ahead of his looming downfall and figure out just who is framing him. It doesn’t look good for him as he starts living a lavish lifestyle after he finds a hidden stash of family money. This sudden change in behavior certainly makes him look like he is guilty, and Nick almost does not realize exactly what is going on. Written with a good eye for human behavior, the author has managed to paint a realistic picture of a clueless man down on his luck and just what he needs to do to survive. Giving him a sidekick of sorts in Lanette was genius as she brings out Nicks hero complex and she is definitely on his side. I did enjoy this book, it had its funny moments underneath all the intrigue and thrilling mystery.
This is absolutely one the books that intrigued me from the beginning and made me feel engrossed up to the very end. Return to Go by Mitchell Graye is a well-written psychological book with a deep and complex storyline. What I absolutely loved about this book was how it managed to make me glued on the story because all things are unpredictable. I loved that it has an air of mystery on it, making me guess what was really the truth behind everything.
It is very rare for me to get fascinated with books that have a pychological aspect on them because sometimes it tends to create confusion on my mind, but this book was a very well-written book and a real page-turner. The writing style of Mitchell Graye was easy to follow as well so I didn't have a hard time connecting to the book. Plus, it has a tasteful sense of humor which was definitely a plus!

A great story. Return to Go by Mitchell Graye is a story that has everything. The story starts with Nick, the Cost Accounting Manager of Continental Industrial, who is suspected of a millionaire robbery. His path crosses with that of Lanette Carlson, a young Canadian girl who went in search of the world of cuteness and works as a stripper. Both will be involved in a lot of issues. I must say that at first, I thought it would be very confusing but I finally enjoyed it. Here, there are several stories that develop simultaneously so you have to read it carefully, but it was easy for me because it is very engaging. I liked the mix between police suspense and crime, with a lustful narrative and characteristic humor. I recommend it!

“Return to Go” is a financial action novel and thriller about big money, conspiracies, and the lives of those unwittingly caught up with it. The protagonist Nick is swept into a huge conspiracy around embezzled money that he is not aware of. He gets involved with his colourful neighbour Lanette and tries to get to the bottom of the suspicions against him.
The plot is engaging with plenty of twists and turns, although I found some of it a bit far-fetched and convoluted. Also, the book needs another round of proofreading to smooth out some errors and language issues. Otherwise, this is a good fast read with plenty of mystery and intrigue.
