Fleur de Bloom, the famous horticultural business, is launching a range of Halloween-themed plants. Lorna is in charge of making sure the party goes with a swing, and Helen is set the tricky task of catering for a thousand guests. Spiderweb cookie, anyone?

A problem arises when a pink-haired ghost won't leave Lorna alone. And when Lorna discovers the bizarre way the woman died, she realizes the ghost is staying for a reason. That reason is murder!

With an annoying uncle who enjoys dressing in spooky costumes and scaring everyone, a feckless brother who might not be as stupid as he appears and a grumpy maintenance man with a dodgy sideline in selling stolen goods, Lorna must figure out who would most benefit from this murder, and how she can prove it.

Join Lorna, Helen, and Flipper in this fun cozy ghost mystery as they try to help a ghost, survive Halloween, and help a sad little dog who has a bad case of the blues.

K.E. O’Connor is the author of the Witch Haven mystery series, the Crypt Witch cozy mysteries, the Lorna Shadow ghost mysteries, the Holly Holmes baking mysteries, the Zee Town paranormal cozy series, and the Old Sarum mystery series, along with other titles available if you cast the right spell. She can imagine dragons, taste cookies when they aren’t even there, and hear the crack of a witch’s broom at a hundred paces.

She graduated from the Universities of Southampton and Reading, where she received degrees in Archaeology and Cognitive Evolution (both highly entertaining to take part in, but with the career options of a ground witch’s toe bone.)

To me, a book is always more enjoyable when the characters are interesting to read about. This was definitely the case with Ghostly Fright, which was a solid cozy mystery with great sleuthing and a lovely cast of characters.

Sometimes, I find that cozy mysteries really like to play up the immoral or bad sides of their suspects to show how suspicious they are. I really liked how no one in this book fit that bill. Everyone had positive and negative sides to them, even the suspects, which made the mystery and the interactions between the characters more suspenseful and realistic.

Everyone's motives for killing, or not killing the victim were all plausible, making the mystery difficult to solve - but in a good way! I liked the challenge.

The thing that kind of bugged me about this book was the involvement - or lack thereof - of the local police. Lorna, the protagonist, and her friend Helen, are kind of going it alone, with the local police not seeming to be that involved in this case at all. Helen is also able to get information out of her husband Gunnar, who is in a different police force, which I found a bit unrealistic. But that's par for the course with most cozy mysteries, and more of a pet peeve than a real issue with this book.

I read most cozy mysteries as standalones, flipping between through series to find books I'm interested in. This one does mostly work as a standalone. The reader isn't explicitly updated on Lorna's gift and on the broad aspects of her and Helen's lives, but you can quickly figure what's going on.

The ghosts are interwoven and important to the investigation, but this is a murder mystery at heart and it is well done. Two friends rescue a Halloween party that is a business promotion because the party planner ditched. While assuming the duties of planner and caterer, they are approached by the brains of the business who was murdered several months ago. Good sleuthing ensues complete with plot twists and red herrings. A very good read!

This has been one of my favourite series and I have to say that this book was not a disappointment. One of the best ones in the series by far. I adore the antics of the characters and the relationships they possess. This book will intrigue you as well as make you giggle in a few places as do the others in the series. Wonderful story-telling.

Great cozy read on a rainy afternoon.

The characters were almost believable. The proofreading was excellent. A little more attention to police details could ha e made it better but otherwise interesting.

Surprise in this book that Zach wasn't more involved as he is a gardener and in the same type of field.
