Distilled from a lifetime in the limelight and enhanced by anecdotes and personal revelations, Joan's Way brings together Joan Collins' inside knowledge of Hollywood glamour together with her common sense guidelines on diet, exercise and well-being. Focusing on ageing gracefully and positively, Joan lifts the lid on the secrets of super youth and shows how it's possible to be stylish and stunning on any occasion whatever your lifestyle or budget.
I’ve always felt a loving connection to Joan Collins, even more so when I learned that she was in “Island in the Sun,” that was filmed here in Grenada, back in the late 50's. This was a fun and helpful book that covered beauty tips, exercise, and so on.
Here are some of my favorite quotes.
Every Day a Miniature Lifetime “One of my close friends, the songwriter and lyricist Leslie Bricusse, has a wonderful philosophy about his life; ‘I try to make each day a miniature lifetime in which I achieve something and I enjoy something.’ Well, that may be tough for most people to achieve every day, although I know Leslie does, but I do believe that a healthy, productive, and enjoyable life is a gift that sadly, we all too often don’t appreciate or celebrate enough.”
Glamour and Hollywood’s Golden Age “Today’s newspapers and magazines are full of so-called glamour. But to me (and many others) most of these women can’t hold a candle to the truly great glamour queens of yesteryear. Ava Gardner, Vivien Leigh, Lana Turner, Jean Harlow, Rita Hayworth, Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe … the list is endless. Each possessed an individualism unique to herself. These stars genuinely wanted to look different from other stars and it would have been anathema to them to appear as a carbon copy of anyone else. … Every actress looked so stunning and was a complete original. Today, in most British and American movies and soaps, I sometimes find it hard to distinguish between the actresses, who seem to have a sameness or ordinariness about them. Yes, I know it’s fashionable today to wear hardly any make up, to let your hair hang over your eyes, and to appear in the most pared-down casual clothes, but I still think that many women look like boring replicas of each other. Even leafing through magazines, I often find it hard to tell the difference between many of the celebrities, who look as if they’ve been cut from the same cookie cutter. I don’t understand many of today’s beautiful women and girls who, to me, seem to want to look plain. Some actresses appear to almost deride their beauty. I can think of several who are naturally beautiful but do everything to negate their looks. In paparazzi shots, their clothes look, to put it mildly, shabby and proletarian. Also, I don’t understand women who knock their looks and put themselves down for being attractive. After all, beauty is a gift given to but a few and it seems wrong to be disrespectful of something that so many others strive for.”
Not a bad book at all, but also not entirely what I was HOPING for. Partially memoir, partially diet & fitness recipe manual, partially high-end lifestyle tips on wedding decor etc. But what she did write about, within those chapters (I skipped the whole fitness&recipes pages!), was a good portion of knowledge from experience that, I'm sure many would find encouraging if not helpful. She has a lovely spark in her observations of our most recent years as humans on planet Earth and Alexis-ish-like sense of humour. She does use the word "anathema" just a few times too many.
I enjoyed her "World According to Joan" a lot more!
This is I believe the last Joan Collins book she wrote. The book was published in 2007. I bought it long time ago - I do not remember anymore the date. It was on my self and I wanted to read it. The book contains 220 pages, colorful and illustrated by Joan Collins photos. You may need 2 full days to read it.
It is self-help book.
I had difficulty reading it as today in 2020, most of the advices are obsolete due to change in living and style of life. I give three stars due to nice writing and illustration, most of advices you can find up to date for free on line.
Joan Collins puts together a book with all the advice that we have heard from our mothers over the years. Advice on health, diet, love, and making your life the best. A fun light read - she is entertaining!
