An Empire fallen. A kingdom beset. A family divided. When King Lortar discovers a savage cult performing heathen rites, he's forced to battle a foe he never his own son. Surrounded by enemies, Lortar is trapped in a world of treachery and betrayal, where mercy is vice and malice is glory.

"Like 'A Game of Thrones' and the First Law trilogy, but cooler."
"No magic? No prophesies or chosen ones? No elves, dwarfs, goblins, or orcs? In a fantasy story? Heresy! I love it!"
"Nice."
"I read this front-to-back overnight. I couldn't put it down. Damn this book. It cost me sleep."
"M-... mai waifu..."
"A gritty fantasy story packed with, war, lust, intrigue, an weird fauna. What's not to love?"
Crown Prince Asuf is taking on his father King Lortar and has aspirations to marry Princess Alerise of the Kinslayer cult. He makes this move without his father’s consent or cares to the political implications for the union. The story opens up with an action scene to pull you in quickly with a battle between a few humans and apes. From this point, this medieval dark fantasy story takes off at a rather rapid pace.
The author did a great job of developing the characters and creating them as more than one-dimensional beings. The story could get a bit overwhelming if you don’t pay attention because there is quite a bit going on. While this one, not my normal read, you cannot deny the author’ s talent for creating an interesting world with the descriptive language used to build out this complex story that serious fans of political dark fantasy stories will enjoy. The familial betrayal, battle scenes, a multitude of interest characters, including monsters/ creatures make this the perfect book for those who like stories like Game of Thrones.
I love fantasy, all the medieval drama, epic battles, and creatures. Igor Valec captures all of that in his gritty epic Damnation. After coming upon a strange cult, King Lortar finds his kingdom thrown into chaos as he is forced to square off against his own son. This world is instantly reminiscent of dark fantasy epics like Game of Thrones, something I enjoyed greatly! This one is perfect for anyone who enjoys a more complicated, intrigue-filled fantasy!
