"Darknight Rebellion" is a high-flying steampunk tale about the young man, Nikolas Scribus, who teams up with a whimsical ally to solve the mystery of his uncle's murder. Along the way, he gets caught up in a plot to 'liberate' a city from the influence of the.. well... malicious Governor Malice. Plots and hijinks ensue. And blasting candy.

This is a first novel, and it shows. However, that's okay. It was fun and interesting read (in my vocabulary; “interesting” is not a euphemism but a high compliment). It had all of the mechanics of a fully fleshed-out novel, such as good pacing, foreshadowing, pinches, and twists. But, the plot does go off the rails a bit. Instead of getting caught up in the city rebellion, I'd have loved to see more swashbuckling against sky pirates (there are sky pirates, but they only make a brief cameo). Sometimes, too, the characters' motivations are unclear or their emotions are insulated from the readers, which prohibited me from connecting with them as deeply.

All of that said, I think Nielson shows a lot of promise as a writer. The whimsical ally Ris, in particular, was an engaging character (truly a character), and I was pleased at the growth Scribus' character displayed through the novel. I'm looking forward to the next novel, as this novel had good seeds, and I believe that the series will only get better.

This book is so well crafted that you don't feel like you're reading a book. It genuinely feels like you are stepping into another world. The details are perfect and you never question its validity. The story takes you on twists and turns that you will not see coming. I can't wait to see where the rest of the series goes! Hopefully this author is a quick writer ;)

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is action packed, right up to the last page. I need the second book to come out pronto because there are so many layers in this world that I still have so many unanswered questions. Very clever and quick thinking characters and I am excited to see what comes next.
