Trends in A Study of Selected Genres is a welcome addition to the growing body of works on the Nigerian cinema. It is part film history and part film theory and criticism. The history part traces the origin of the Nigerian cinema up to the present era of video productions. The work examines in detail, the contextual issues which have helped to define emergent trends within the industry.
Disappointing. Despite this being published in 2014, Ayakoroma states "it can be posited that there have been no remarkable attempts in the areas of animated and science fiction (sci-fi) films." Um, what about 'Kajola' (2009)? This was the same year 'District 9' was such a success in South Africa (and upset the Nigerians no end due to its xenophobia.) The under-performance of 'Kajola' effectively tanked Nollywood's attempts at Big Budget SF until 'Ratnik' (2020).
