“International interest in this distinctive art form was renewed by Sherwood, whose personal collection is considered the world’s most comprehensive. Captivating and commanding, this opulent compilation superbly show-cases vivid new interpretations of familiar subjects.” —Booklist. “Equally important for both botanical and art collections.”—Library Journal.
I loved this book. The author’s collection of plant art is stunning and she gives some personal, geographic/ecological, artistic, technical context for the artists, many of whom seem to be women with additional work. Idk why the publishers in 1996 didn’t help her edit out some orientalist language about the east India company and other horrific such things that casually seeps into her writing at times. Despite this, there is a lot of accessible and genuinely game changing info in her writing — it’s harder to sum up the highlights because there are so many— the point is that this person has created a beautifully curated and organized book that is both a resource and experience/source of inspiration for botany and affection for plants
