Giuseppe Verdis Opern überraschen immer wieder mit kühner Musik und ausführlichen Sterbeszenen. Dabei war ihr Schöpfer kein weltabgewandter Melancholiker, sondern ein hart arbeitender Komponist, der sich heftig an Zensoren, Opernimpresarios und Obrigkeiten rieb, aktiv am Freiheitskampf Italiens teilnahm und zum Gegenpol Richard Wagners wurde. Das Bildmaterial der Printausgabe ist in diesem E-Book nicht enthalten.
Verdi seems like a great guy. He was always complaining, probably horrible to work for him, but he also helped a lot of people, both friends and strangers either directly or through charity and foundations.
Musically and politically he was the opposite of Wagner, so he claimed and that matches what I was thinking about him as I worked my way through this German-language book. The bits in here about specific snatches of music mostly went over my uneducated head but I do have a better idea now of what route I want to take through his music, what order I will watch the operas in.
I would also really like to visit the Villa Verdi in Sant’Agata. I am turning into a real Verdi freak!
