This comprehensive review of HRM concepts and techniques is complemented by the authors' highly readable style. The text provides extensive coverage of HRM topics such as job analysis, recruitment, selection, orientation, training, compensation and benefits, performance appraisal, health and safety, and union-management relations. HRM in Canada continues to offer the most in-depth coverage of emerging trends in HRM. It also provides features such as Research Insight and Ethical Dilemma boxes to promote student learning.
This textbook presents a solid introduction to Human Resources Management in Canada. There are 17 chapters in total, with each chapter pertaining to some HR function (recruitment, selection, training, performance appraisals, compensation, benefits, etc.). This is definitely not something I’d go out of my way to read, and really the only reason I had the motivation to read it was because it’s part of an elective I’m taking this school term.
By far my favourite chapter in this textbook was the one on discrimination. That chapter covers intentional vs. unintentional discrimination, cases where discrimination is permissible (the Bona Fide occupational requirement), and what can be done to prevent discrimination in the workplace. All super cool stuff and a nice break from all the science courses I’m taking.
Unfortunately, some chapters are pretty dry and unnecessarily long in my opinion.
The writing is easy to understand, which is definitely a point in its favour since I often read it after dinner when I was all sleepy. :,)
This book really gave me a good idea of HR in Canada and it was really well done in my opinion. I had never really studied HR before and I was able to grasp the theories really well. It definitely is a must read for those studying HR
Overall it's informative and provides the necessary information. I was irritated with how much repetition there was, but in some ways (to help reinforce learning) it is beneficial. Personally, I preferred using the Belcourt textbook "Managing Human Resources" for studying for the NKE.
