This absolutely delightful book was written by a teenager. She & I are also members of the same church. It astounded me and, I suspect, others to hear the announcement of its appearance. We have never formally met, but I did have occasion to speak with her mother about the writing process.
From the first page I was completely captivated by this unusual story. Some will say, with reason, that it borders on fantasy (nothing wrong with that, mind you)...& I would somewhat agree, but I found that the Ms. Sanders injected an amazing amount of insight and wisdom into the story of twins, Maggie & Mark. She runs the whole gamut of emotions, certainly those of a teenager (since the characters are teenagers in most of the book), but certainly not exclusively...they're human emotions with which most of us are quite familiar. Her playfulness & humor throughout is refreshing. There are small examples of very adult precision throughout the book. She seems to have obviously read a good bit of classic mythology, & her keen perception of people & detail rings true. It almost feels wrong to criticize anything about the book, but I did feel that the ending might've stood some further work, though it "works" as it stands. I hope Lillian Sanders will continue to hone her obvious & impressive creative skills in writing...I think she could become an outstanding author!
