Vigilantes, heroines, or criminals? Inspired by the violent labor revolt of 1878 on the island of St. Croix, Fireburn The Screenplay weaves a tale of passion, purpose, and revenge.
This book related a really captivating tale of four women who fought for freedom on the island of St. Croix. Although the story takes place after the abolition of slavery, blacks on the island were still being subjected to harsh treatment and a only had quasi freedom. In an effort to make things better for people, Mary Thomas and three other women, led the people on the island in a revolt against the estate owners who had viciously subjugated them on a day to day basis.
The book was written in the style of a play. The writing was really easy to follow and the characters were relatable. Although the book is not historically accurate, it does introduce readers to an event in the history of the U.S. Virgin Islands with which many may be unfamiliar.
Picked this up while on the island and could not put it down. Angela Golden Bryan tells a captivating story inspired by historical events. I would really love to see this made into a film with these characters brought to life.
