Portrait of Chloe

Rate this book
She was born plain Dora, in a bleak northern town where her future seemed all too predictable. But from the moment she first walked, pursuing a coloured ball across the floor, she went after what she wanted, and got it. At the age of eighteen she wanted freedom and a new life - and a new name, Chloe. She went to Brighton, to work as a mother's help to a Member of Parliament and his wife, and she glimpsed for the first time a life of luxury and wealth - a life which, she believed, could be hers. But her new circumstances brought with them difficulties which she could not have foretold, including the passionate interest of her boss and the unexpected bond which she discovered with the small children in whose charge she had been put. Torn between the interest of an attractive older man and her feelings of affection and loyalty towards his wife and children, Chloe embarked upon a dangerous course. Then a near tragedy changed everything for her, although it also brought a new love into her life and helped her to grow up and to appreciate what she had.

Dora , who soon changed her name to Chloe, was a single minded young girl with aspirations of bettering herself by moving from her home town to Brighton. The story set in the early 1950s was at a much gentler pace of good manners , respect and appearance. She relies on her stunning natural beauty to work in her favour. Underneath is a selfish nature and naive character which some older characters are well aware of. She didn’t plan on getting involved or attached to anyone in the family then almost tears them in two twice . Then one day everything changed with both children as she had been neglectful. This lead to a chain of events which finally saw her grow up. I love this author as she does not waste time with conversation to fill in , there is always a story unfolding, no skipping pages or getting bored .

Intriguing, a wonderful unfolding of a story you never want to end!

I enjoy reading books that grasp my interest right away and this one had me in the front row of the scene. It felt like you were in the room or on the beach and experiencing all your senses, ie sight, sound, smell, and taste. Full of suspense many times and I enjoy happy endings. I wanted the story to never end! I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to be entertained AND having a wonderful feeling of JOYFULLNESS at THE END!
