The most up-to-date and comprehensive guide to the children's fiction market includes vital information on markets, magazines, and publishers, as well as contact names and submission guidelines for each, and helpful advice from and interviews with Newbery medalist Audrey Couloumbis, William Joyce, Megan McCafferty, Christopher Paolini, and other notables. Original. 35,000 first printing.
My favorite features in this 2007 edition are the articles "U.S. vs. U.K. Children's Fiction" and "Creating Books for the Youngest Reader". The latter is a roundtable discussion with six people who write, edit, and/or publish board books. It was fascinating to learn the current issues with marketing this niche. I really nodded my head along with Summer Dawn Laurie, who in answer to the question, "What are the most common misconceptions about baby board books?", said, "That any book can be taken, shrunk down, printed on board stock and there you have it . . . a board book!" Even more important to me was Emily Jenkins' response to the same question: "I think the biggest misconception is that quality doesn't matter. People assume a junky, badly written thing is fine for a baby, because the baby doesn't know the difference and is only going to suck on it anyway."
These mentions are just an introduction--there are many other great points raised, as well as interviews with Christopher Paolini and William Joyce. If you like children's books, don't miss this.
If you have children's stories or illustrations to sell, this book is a good research / reference tool.. There is a problem with it though. It is published once every 3 years and it gets out-dated quickly..
