The Psalms are divided into five Books. This commentary, Psalms Volume 2, covers Books III, IV & V Psalms 73-150. Book III was written by temple musicians, Asaph and sons of Korah, primarily concerned with the temple and the people. Books IV & V focus on God’s answers to the Psalmists’ problems, praise and thanksgiving. Book V Psalms 107-150 is categorized into Psalms of David, Passover, ascent and hallelujahs, each with introduction. There is extra analysis of Psalm 119, which is divided into five sections: guidance, suffering, value/purity of the Word, enemies, obedience. When applicable, the author gives the historical Biblical background for and New Testament references to each Psalm citing chapter and verse (Psalm 90 from Moses in Genesis, Romans, Ecclesiastes), he shares hymns inspired by them (Psalm 118 - Hosanna, Sanctus of Communion liturgy) and he explains the derivation and meaning of words (see chart of Psalm 119). There is a lot to cover, some repetitive, and he does a good job referring back/forward to other sections of his commentary so that he doesn’t repeat himself. There is an extensive introduction in Psalms Volume 1, which is worth revisiting. The Introduction covers authorship, types (messianic, imprecatory), dating, collection, arrangement, poetry and music of the Psalms. Psalms is the Bible’s book of hymns. Full of prayer, the Psalms cover praise and thanksgiving, sin, repentance and forgiveness, sorrow and joy. with plenty of good insights, comfort and nuggets for life application.
