Great pace and interesting (and dark) story. It kinda miss a bang in the finale but the reading is very pleasant and it's short enough to be read without too much commitment.
This book, composed by a French journalist assigned to Moscow, covers the last year of the life of Communist Party Secretary Joseph Stalin, using this as a device to reflect upon what Stalin represented and what transpired upon his death.
Nothing special, but I did find the European perspective of the author refreshingly different.
Bortoli explores the last year of Stalin's life and the first months following his death. The book tells the story with a high sense of drama and pointed irony. The book is very readable, displays no pretense of political correctness, and highlights the struggle for preeminence within the Soviet Communist leadership that accompanied Stalin's demise.
