After her parents' divorce Emma Conway had seen little of her father, and now that she was going to Switzerland to visit him and his young second wife Hilde it was really only out of a sense of duty. However, Emma settled down reasonably happily at first, and managed to sustain a friendly relationship with her young stepmother.
Then Emma met Kurt Alther, Hilde's handsome cousin, and everything changed when she fell wildly in love with him.
Only .....did Kurt return her feelings? He paid her a lot of attention, but Emma could not avoid the suspicion that she was only a stopgap, that another woman held a more important place in Kurt's life - and she grew uneasily more certain who that woman was. While all Greg Burnham, who loved her, could do for Emma was to wait until it was time to pick up the pieces.
Nan Asquith and Susannah Broome are pseudonyms for Nancy Evelyn Pattinson.
Nancy Evelyn Pattinson, the author of 20 or so romantic novels, settled in Harpenden, England after WWII and stayed there until shortly before her death in the 1970's.
Full of drama, but wow, there is so much wrong with what occurs in this book! Also, first person in this case leaves you seeing things through the vantage point of a superficial idiot.
This was an interesting story from an author I've only really just discovered. Emma Conway met Greg Burnham on her arrival in Switzerland, but it was Kurt Alther, the handsome and debonair cousin of her stepmother who captured her heart.
The charming Kurt dominates Emma's thoughts but it is Greg who remains steadily in the background providing comfort and security. I don't usually like TSTL heroine's who can't see the woods for the trees but this was a nice enough read and there was no read confusion about who the heroine was meant to be with in the end.
