Rate this book
Claremonte County is full of regrets. Jonah Stockwell, retiring as Claremonte’s sheriff soon, has a conscience stuffed with them. In the last year, he's seen three of his staff corrupted and one killed. The county's addiction to cocaine endures. Lasting stains on a once-great career. Then there's Dwayne Loveless. Claremonte's favorite resident. A man Stockwell knows to be a criminal but has never been able to put away. Stockwell’s White Whale. With the election to replace Stockwell looming, and a man hand-picked by Dwayne Loveless favored to win over Stockwell’s own chosen successor, the deaths begin. The drugs Stockwell has failed to remove are claiming the lives of people he's sworn to protect. The Sheriff's biggest failures haunt his final days. But the deaths also provide a chance for Stockwell to atone for those failures. An opportunity to walk away with no regrets. Though his tenure in Claremonte is coming to an end, Sheriff Jonah Stockwell will find that while he reclaims his legacy, he will play a role in the personal redemption of other Claremonte residents... ...and, quite possibly, in reclaiming an entire county's soul.

THE COST OF REDEMPTION (the second installment in Claremonte County Lines series by JJ Falco) is a twisty ride, with villainy around every turn!

Since the days of Detective Dan Kibirli (in THE PRICE OF CONCEIT), county operations in Claremonte, Texas, have continued to deteriorate like the windmill where teenagers indulge in the town’s cocaine epidemic. Horrible enough that the drug problem has turned citizens of all ages into addicts. But now, tainted cocaine is instantly killing them.

Enter: Claremonte’s police department, led by retiring Sheriff Jonah Stockwell. He doesn’t doubt the identity of the drug KingPin, but he has never been able to expose the man’s covert operation. Probably because Dwayne Loveless—the richest man in town—has everyone in his pocket, including the candidate running to replace Sheriff Stockwell.

But here’s the million-dollar question: why would the KingPin kill off his clientele?

Clearly, someone in town is even more sinister than Loveless. And their form of deranged redemption involves murdering everyone associated with the town’s untouchable villain.

We’ll have to wait until the third installment to find out who is the most malevolent of them all…

Although huge cliffhangers usually aren't a favorite of mine, this read earned five stars because I enjoyed the twisty ride of being shocked by the uber dysfunctional town dynamics. And as with Falco’s first installment, I love guessing which evil character is behind the mayhem. Narrowing the possibilities makes me feel like a detective! Can’t wait to see if my hunches pan out :)

Wow, the cost of redemption IS high.

Falco continues to build on a steady stream of no-goods and struggling characters -- creating a novel full of high emotion and tension. I'm convinced Claremonte is a real place - a small town with big problems.

An edge-of-your-seat ride, the suspense holds steady, much like the worn windmill on the outskirts of town.
