The stranger arched a knowing eyebrow and closed Mouse’s fingers around the flute. “Someday, perhaps, you can return this kindness by giving the gift of music to someone else in their time of need.”Mouse—a fugitive and former stowaway—had no way of knowing that his benefactor was the very man that the Captain of the Hunter’s Ghost was hunting…or how playing music again would lead to a series of impossible choices…“The Enemy comes for you, child. A foe like no other. The night will be long and dark. The dangers will seem too great. But you must find your song, child, even when that seems impossible...”Those dark words by the kumpania’s ancient Seer are Seldy’s first warning that the life she adores—in the only home she’s ever known—is coming to a quick and violent end...The Maiden’s Song is a tale of love and sacrifice of how Mouse and Seldy must endure intertwined journeys of self-discovery while being hunted by an implacable foe who will stop at nothing to claim the power of her secret heritage for himself.
It took me a few hours to collect my thoughts and figure out how I wanted to approach my feelings about this book before I was ready to share my review of this story.
I first off want to add that I was quite intimidated by the length of this book.....My biggest fear was that 759 pages was most likely going make me get really bored with this book very quickly. And being this author's debut book, I was a bit skeptical too. Most books this big I generally avoid because I lose interest in the story after a while. And while the cover is beautiful, it felt kind of bland to me. I felt as if the story wasn't shining through the cover.....But my motto is "Give the book a chance, don't judge it just yet". So with my motto in mind, I got right to reading this book and I realized from the start that boring was NOT the word to use. I also understood the cover better as I continued to read too. I will get into more detail of the story-line in a minute.
The characters were phenomenal!! The story of Seldy and Rondel (Mouse) is completely unforgettable. I felt a royal connection to the characters right off the bat. The author spared no details making sure that we would never forget them and the struggles they suffered within this story. The adventure that Seldy and Rondel went though separately and together really made my heart hurt for them in some parts while in others, I was rooting the characters on.
The story-line was......I still have no words!! This very rarely happens when a story makes me speechless. The feelers within this story were abundant and I felt them all as the words flowed like music from the pages of it. Pierce did a remarkable job keeping me in suspense by switching character POV's. I love it when authors do this because I like to know what is going on with different characters in a story. Sure, one character POV is great but multiple just makes the story that much more intense and interesting. It makes me want to continue to read even if it's to get back to the character and the spot the author left me screaming. And boy did the author leave me thinking "how could you leave it off there!!". lol I was completely addicted by this author's style of writing. I just couldn't help myself....I totally HAD to know what would happen next, which brings me to say that it wasn't long until I finished this book!! I am actually a bit sad to know that this story is over for now and the cliffhanger at the end has so many questions running through my head that I hope they will be answered in the next book. This was a powerful story from beginning to end. This story and it's characters has taken a piece of my heart and hidden it within the pages of this book. I am so glad that I took that plunge into reading this book because this debut author has gained a new follower and I highly recommend this read!!
First, It took me a minute to start the book. It has a whopping 769 pages. I don't think I had read a book that long since A Song of Ice & Fire, especially a fantasy book.
The story of Mouse and Seldy's journey and how they are entangled was very well written and properly executed in format and structure. The author weaves with intricate detail the journey to come. I can't say much without giving it away. The Author did an amazing job of developing the characters and allowing their story to unfold organically. He mixed that with a host of interesting and vital supporting characters. Through his words, I could almost feel each scene and the emotions, especially the pain, that was endured. I liked the fact that the Author didn't just tell us of the personal growth, but it was demonstrated through action and the reactions of our primary character. While lengthy, the story did manage to keep me engaged enough to want to complete and find out what's next in this story. Mr. Pierce has set a high standard for himself that I hope is maintained in the sequel.
“The Enemy comes for you, child. A foe like no other. The night will be long and dark. The dangers will seem too great. But you must find your song, child, even when that seems impossible...”
You'll have to read it to find out why those words are relevant and important.
I have to start this off by saying this is an incredible book! If you are passionate about fantasy, this is a must-read. Every character in this book is so interesting, right down from the ones you know are just minor characters filling the world and giving it life. And the world! Pierce does an amazing job taking you right there, putting you in the middle of it without burdening you with too much at once.
The story is also wonderful and it starts to come together early on, so you're not constantly guessing what the point of each scene is. Everything feels connected and purposeful, and that can't be easy to do!
So now I have to come to the ONLY reason I'm not giving this five stars: the formatting. It's very informal and feels more like an unfinished word document. Fixing the extra spacing and shortening the length of the paragraph indents could have shaved down the ending page count, making the paperback version a little easier to hold. But hey-that's what second editions are for!
The Maiden's song is a good read. The blurb made me want to read this one but when I got the book I was scared to read it because it's a big book. I shy away from books over 300 pages because I like a book that can be read in a day or day. After it sat on my desk for a few days, I finally picked it up. I was sucked into the story fairly quickly. It's nicely written and so very detailed that it pulled me in to another world. Mouse and Seldy interesting characters. They are the first two character we get introduced to and I wanted to know more about them and how their stories where going to intertwine. This one was a really good read.
This is one of those rare times where I find myself frustrated in finding the right words for an amazing book. Truly a tale for the ages, The Maiden's Song will wrap you lovingly within its pages and keep you spellbound. A brilliant debut for what is sure to be a brilliant series, you'll want to curl up and lose yourself in a tale spun to rival the adventures in Narnia.
