It’s 2016 and young Lou Bannister is lapping up the bright lights of Leeds, embarking on a Film and Media degree he hopes will give him a new start. When the love of his life Annette McBride turns up to research her family tree Lou’s world is suddenly turned upside down. Things quickly turn from bad to worse when the body of a young student is found close by. Investigations lead Lou and Nette to the darker side of the city and it’s becoming increasingly likely that the killer may be someone they know. Can Lou and Nette track down the perpetrator before he strikes again? In 1872 a young Locksmith, John McBride arrives in Leeds to begin work at Armley jail. A country boy at heart, he is repulsed by the stark and insanitary conditions of the city and the lawlessness it breeds. The only place he can seek comfort is the local church where he meets the minister’s daughter, Florrie Lee Hardcastle. Deploring the society that ignores its festering slums they work together to make the city a better place; feeding the hungry, tending the sick, visiting prisoners at Armley Jail, whilst slating the legal system that dragged them down. Can John and Florrie make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate? Two young men from very different eras seek to make the city a better place. Time passes, people change but MURDER is always MURDER.

A Gripping Read! Here we have two mysteries of missing persons in Leeds, Yorkshire ~ possibly murder ~ but one is in 1872 and the other in 1916. John Mc Bride works with his father as a lock smith in a local gaol. His lodgings are barely adequate, his surroundings grim compared to what he has left behind in Scotland and the conditions at his work unbearable at times, all atmospherically described by Felicity Snowden as she sets the scenes. In 1916 we have students arriving to study, coincidentally as it turns out, in the same lodgings as John and his father. Lou is worried about his mate Matt, the cousin of Dag who is to share a room with him. Matt appears to have turned up but then disappeared. There are love elements in both eras too, adding to interest as John seeks solace in a local church and meets Florrie, whereas Lou is surprised to bump into the estranged love of his life Netty in a library. The plot twists involve family history searches as Nette discovers family links which in the end help to solve the plot. The novel is well written with graphic descriptions - tension and drama at every turn of the page. Palpable fear and danger, mixed with emotions of longing and desperation keep you gripped to the end of the novel. I really enjoyed it. A great read!!!
The second book in this series and again Felicity has kept the settings local Leeds instead of Whitby this time. The book has 2 distinct time lines then and now, both time lines have individual Murder mysteries to solve Brilliant
This is the second book I have read by this great author. This follows two mysteries; one based in 1872 and the other in 1916. This is based in Leeds, the two separate mysteries work really well together. Another fantastic read which I would highly recommend.
Another well written book. Moving to Leeds this time. Same chapters moving from time to time. Two mystery’s for the price of one. Look forward to the next one.
