The Fifth Canadian edition of Everyday Encounters by Wood/Schweitzer is a theory-based interpersonal communication textbook, unique in its emphasis on theories, research, and skills with attention paid to trends in Canadian social life. The conversational writing style engages students, helping them to connect what they are learning to their personal experience. Social diversity – including awareness of race, economic class, gender, age, and sexual orientation – is woven into discussions of communication theory and skills. This resource also addresses communication challenges, confusions, and issues within friendships, romantic relationships (including abuse and violence between intimates); long-distance relationships, and the use of communication to negotiate safer sex in an era shadowed by HIV and AIDS. MindTap is now available for Everyday Encounters. A fully online learning solution, MindTap combines all student learning tools―readings, multimedia, activities, and assessments―into a single Learning Path that guides the student through the curriculum. Instructors can personalize the experience by customizing the presentation of these learning tools to their students, even seamlessly introducing their own content into the Learning Path.
I changed textbooks for my Interpersonal Communications class this year because the students hated REACHING OUT and then when the 10th edition of REACHING OUT came out I read it and looked it over and it was the laziest update I've ever seen. A new chapter was written, another chapter was deleted, but then the prologue and the epilogue were exactly the same mentioning the old chapter and not even mentioning the new...so, I thought, "$83 for students to buy this and the jerk didn't have the common courtesy to edit the whole book...bye bye...". EVERYDAY ENCOUNTERS was on my desk one day, I'm assuming from the Cengage salesman who's always trolling the halls...I didn't want to read it, but then I decided to give it a second chance after the new edition of REACHING OUT came out. I really enjoyed it after a cursory skimming, so I've now read it and am teaching it at a "Mini-Session" up at Washington State Penitentiary, and they really like it too...so...I think this is the winner. I also like that it is really up-to-date...it even includes the Obama election...I also like all of the comic strips...they are well-chosen and add a little somethin' somethin'...
