An attempt to understand and explain the cultural revolution in the context of the Chinese revolution. It was written in 1967 when the cultural revolution was at its height and information in and about the country had dried up.
So while it has some interesting ideas and brings up some revealing facts often obscured, some of its predictions did not really materialise. It also has several limitations associated with the left communist tendencies. At one point in a surprising turn Brendel downplays and dismisses the Shanghai councils of 1927, the reason?
