On the pleasure boats of the Old Mississippi, passions ran high when men gambled for the favors of beautiful women -- and renegades carried off girls along with other loot. Disguised as a notorious outlaw, hot-blooded Dave Macdonough invaded the river rogues' hideout in a reckless attempt to destroy them. But his mission became an act of persona! vengeance when he met the lovely swamp water girl who was their captive mistress.
Hero is a nearly broke riverboat gambler, who might be about to change his luck. But no. A bunch of swamp rats break onto his boat and clean everyone out. So he has a proposition for his fellow players — how about staking me so that I can infiltrate their gang? They accept. And then...
Well this is one of those books which goes from event to event to event at a breakneck pace. It’s fun enough, as each of the cliches of the Mississippi riverboat genre is trotted out. There is a beautiful southern belle, a luscious swamp babe, a duel, cheating gamblers, powerfully accurate shooting, and some nice knife fights. There is this set of inbred nasty crooks. And our hero has all the manly virtues and manly attributes. However, oddly for this sort of novel, there is not a single solitary black person.
Obviously a series was intended, as an utterly unconvincing finale is tacked on that sends our “my gosh, that’s a real man” hero off to California. 3.5 stars.
