Mankind's first contact with an extraterrestrial species didn't exactly go well. The inadvertent destruction of the Earth saw a call go out to the vast and ancient empire for help. Despite the quick response to this plea for aid, the remnants of humanity find themselves refugees in an overcrowded galaxy and at the mercy of an empire whose existence predates mankind's own existence. Unwanted and unwelcome, humanity languishes in a dozen massive colony ships around an energy poor star. As a young smuggler, Jonah Mctier is one of those fortunate few who has access to this millennial old realm, and it is he who after fleeing a triad of imperial cruisers, discovers the answer to mankind's dilemma. In desperation Jonah finds refuge in a parsecs deep dust cloud where he discovers not only a habitable and empty planetary system but one of the most sought after resources in the Milky Way a spatial conduit. Except this is no ordinary conduit. Exploitation of this unique and unknown type of spatial gateway offers an alternative to the slow but inevitable descent into extinction for the children of Adam. Key to this bright future is the need to keep their phenomenal find a secret from the resource hungry empire who would take this discovery for themselves and themselves alone. To complicate matters, Jonah discovers that there is more than one of these gateways, and for humanity to be successful in their quest mankind must hold and eventually destroy all of these rare portals.

There is so much I want to say about this book, but I'll try and contain myself. A little.

First off, I loved the premise and I really connected with the characters. Even some of the secondary ones when Jonah is "invited" to meet with the Emperor. The pace was good, never lagging longer than the reader needs to catch their breath. 'Baby' annoyed the heck out of me at first, but I kept reading. In fact, I've had a difficult time putting it down. It is a longer book, and I'm so glad.
Mr. Burnett, I do hope there's going to be a sequel to Jonah's story, because as soon as I find this book in print, I plan on buying it. It's that good.
Yes, really!

Body-snatched two-leggers (humans) turn into thousand-legged, hive-minded zombies. Guts, guns, gore, and Jersey justice. It couldn't have happened in a better state. No one screws with Jersey.

"Planes of Exodus" eBook was published in 2018 and was written by Robert J. Burnett. This is Mr. Burnett's first published novel.

I received an ARC of this novel through https://www.netgalley.com in return for a fair and honest review. I categorize this novel as ‘R’ because it contains scenes of Violence and Mature Situations. The story is set in the far future. Earth has been destroyed and all that is left of humanity has been surviving as refugees in an overcrowded galaxy. The primary character is Jonah Mactier, a young smuggler.

Mactier accidentally stumbles across an incredible find while trying to evade Imperial vessels. He discovers an unknown system with a human compatible planet. Not only that, he finds a spatial conduit to the Andromeda galaxy. A galaxy that seems to be devoid of intelligent life.

He returns to his home on Alterhome, one of the colony ships that house the remnants of humanity. He makes his way directly to his mentor Jamie Kiernan and explains his find. , There he meets Tyran deMuelles, Kiernan's new protégée, with whom he instantly falls in love.

Kiernan, deMuelles, and Mactier then work together to bring humanity to their new home without alerting Imperial forces of their plan. Their effort is not without challenges.

I enjoyed the 10+ hours I spent reading this 541-page science fiction story. I enjoyed this story and liked the plot and the characters. The Imperial forces seem far more inept than I would expect. The cover art is OK. I give this novel a 4 out of 5.

I really liked Plains of Exodus, by Robert J. Burnett. It’s not without a quibble or two, but I just had to keep reading it all the way to the end. (It still took me three days to read – it’s long!) I guess I’ll start with what I didn’t like about the book. The author introduced a major female character by her physical attributes. Curves, boobs, hair – standard sci-fi stuff for twenty years ago. It was really only the introduction, and the character is pretty bad-ass, but the description was a turn off for me. The other quibble was that the book formatting was hella odd. The chapters seemed to have scene breaks that had their own numbers? Hopefully it was because I was reading a pre-release version from NetGalley.

Now, on to the good stuff. Plains of Exodus is a straight up popcorn sci-fi. No deep political machinations, no heavy-handed social or religious subtext. Just a group of humans versus an overpopulated universe after tragedy destroyed the Earth. The entire book is an exciting read, and this would make an excellent miniseries. (They did it with Altered Carbon, and The Expanse, so this totally could be one too.) I can’t wait for a sequel. You hear me, Robert? I want a sequel. Five stars, and a must read.

I read sci-fi every time I can get my hands on one. This one was a nice surprise.

Fairly well written, some typos etc. I received and read an ARC from Netgalley so hopefully those were fixed before the pub date.

Jonah, the main character was very well developed. The supporting cast, not so well developed. But that is how the trends are going these days. I do hope if there is a sequel, the other characters are given a bit more body.

The premise of this story is great. Earth is gone, but gone for so long it is rather an afterthought. Then the chance for not just one planet home but several. There is a whole new galaxy to explore. Cool.

This is an exciting read because it isn't the general, usual fare for sci-fi. Nicely done. Looking forward to more from Burnettt.

While not quite a space opera, the book has a classic S/F scope to it. The story was good enough, but did not always maintain my interest. I was pleased however that love story was not a distraction from the overall narrative.

The Earth is a dead planet with the human population living in massive star ships. Humanity is hoping to find a new home. Then smuggler Jonah Mctier makes an amazing discovery.

Plains of Exodus revolves around the hero Jonah discovering an unmapped planet. His discovery also includes a wormhole to a new galaxy. His discovery not only could provide a home for humans. It might give humanity power in the galactic empire. An empire that wants nothing to do with helping people who survived Earth’s downfall.

Author Robert Burnett crafts an interesting new sci-fi world. Our galaxy has been ruled by an empire for millions of years. Earth is a backward planet few care about. Until that is Jonah finds a new planet with resources the empire would like access to.

With the help of friends and family Jonah works to keep the worm-hole secret. Yet at the same time the all of humanity starts the trek to the new planet.

There is a fair amount of backstory about how the empire works. There is also the history on how Earth came to die. The author did a great job with trickling out that information as it was needed. Never in reading this book did I feel bogged down in a technical information dump.

Overall the story is a well-paced adventure. The ending is satisfying and could work as the jumping off point to more stories. Personally, I would like to see more adventures of Jonah as he explores the other side of the wormhole.

If you are looking for a good sci-fi read check out Plains of Exodus.

A classical "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" sort of story. Only this time it's not really aliens but a mutant species of centipede that takes over a small New Jersey town during a violent storm. The centipedes soon bend most everyone to their will, making their human slaves into cannibalistic monsters.

A few townspeople remain unaffected to fight back. Not a lot of big twists, except one involving a little girl with hidden talents. Overall a rip-roaring good story.

One minor nitpick is too much use of "fierce." Fierce joy, fierce love, fierce hugs, and maybe a few I missed. It was a little repetitive.

That is all.

Jersey Gore

Excellent evocation of a sleepy small town but too many bodies litter the countryside. Enough killing and ravaging to satisfy bloodthirsty horror fans but not enough humanity to engage the more serious Sci-fi reader. it appears geared toward young adult readers that would enjoy a Starship Troopers shoot'em up (rip'em up?) mixed with a Stephen King horror-in-a-familiar-setting.

Unable to finish. The epub format provided by the publisher did not allow changing font size. I tried to read the very small print but could not continue. What I did read would make me think this would be a well thought out story line with inventive characters.
