Well written overview of a wide range of folk artists, primarily from the 18th and 19th centuries. Each artist is represented with 3-5 excellent color reproductions. Every chapter is written by a contributor who has done scholarly research on that particular artist and although a full biography is not always possible to provide, it is amazing how much information has been uncovered, much of which is absolutely fascinating, about the lives and artistic accomplishments of these self-taught, often eccentric artists. Almost all of the artists in the book, featured in a 1980 Whitney Museum Exhibit, are as expected, especially for that time period, predominantly white and male, but there are a few female artists and even 1 black artist profiled in the book. You'll be surprised at the range of styles.
