Stretch Washburn and his granddaughter, Bunkie, retrace the journey of their ancestor, Dr. Morgan Washburn, down the Emigrant Trail to California in 1849 and are kidnapped by two escaped murderers
Born Henry Hunt Searls Jr. novelist and screenwriter Hank Searls, author of the best-selling Overboard, Jaws II (based on the movie), and Sounding, is creator of the New Breed TV series and writer for the 1960's classic television series The Fugitive . His novel Pilgrim Project became Robert Altman's film Countdown. He has lived most of his life on, under, or over the ocean, having been a world-cruising yachtsman, underwater photographer, and Navy flier.
An older book (1984) that I have wanted to read for some time. I read the author's SOUNDING twice it was so good. This book was a good read, flipping back from the present to 1849 or so in one family's history. Nice work, ties the generations together well. The story in the present time was extra suspenseful where prison escapees and murderers take a grandfather and granddaughter hostage despite the setting being in time of no cell phones, GPS, tracking devices, etc.
