The moving true story, caught by the author from a shining star, of a little girl who died too young. Then of her bravery as, all alone but for her parents’ love and the kind eyes of a dog, she at last found her way through the thickets in the valley of the shadow of death to heaven (and who do you think was there to welcome her?)
Emily and the monster tell the story or rather it can be called a journey of a little girl called named Emily. While Emily is still a little girl who is cared for and loved, God has different plans and wants her back where she came from. The big dark dog with kind eyes escorts her through realms where she knew, she could one day, meet her parents and her loved ones. The reader is taken on a journey alongside Emily to heaven.
Ruth Finnegan's writing is simple and easy for kids to follow. Finnegan's writing style makes the reader feel like they are sitting in a circle while the author is reading to us. Her writing is calming, comforting, and informative. Rather than describing death as something sad and horrible, the author speaks of it as a beautiful journey through the realm, to heaven where we all came from. Emily was a strong little girl who strived to comfort her parents even through times of crisis and it was truly inspiring to read a book with 20 pages that carries so much emotion and beauty. While Emily’s parents found it hard to accept the departure of their little girl they had to let go of her and let her begin her journey to heaven. She might be apart but their love would entwine through realms. The way the author described the communication with no words, between the family was heartbreaking and emotional at the same time. The narrative of the little girl through darkness unto the light of the kind eyes of the dog was heartwarming. The vivid picture of Emily who didn’t cry when her parents did, who didn’t scream when she met the vicious monster, who was a sunshine warrior would melt anyone’s heart. The book, though short is compelling and emotional yet soothing.
Emily and the Monster is a marvelous story for kids to learn about the journey of life and death through Emily's strength.
"Emily and the Monster: The Story of a Little Girl" written by Ruth Finnegan is a very unique and emotion stirring children's book. It follows the journey of a young child, Emily, who with her family deals with an unexpected situation. Emily is being sent to heaven, and the book covers the event in a very interesting way. It follows Emily's feelings and reaction but not only do we get Emily’s perspective, we get to see how her parents felt and how they dealt with the situation.
Author Ruth Finnegan covers such a heavy topic like death in a very unique and friendly way for kids to understand. It was interesting to see the author's perspective through the characters involved, as the author captivates the general essence of the characters . Not only were the characters well written but the overall writing and descriptions were very well put together. Everything could easily be imagined and followed. Finnegan managed to explain Emily's journey in very little pages, making it easy to read but still very educational.
I think this children's book covers death in a way that’s kid-friendly but also educational. Finnegan's writing makes it easier for kids to understand the journey and imagine it. I think it is a great book to introduce kids to this topic as it’s an extremely heartfelt and touching story.
I have mixed feelings about the book. It starts off as a very fun, happy and cheerful story with very cute interruptions from the author from time to time which makes the book feel interactive. This technique is most definitely helps to keep the children engaged in the story and somehow makes the whole book seem more vivid. But then, the plot makes quite a dark turn very rapidly, and the story becomes darker and darker for a very unclear reason.
It seems to me that the authors were trying to put some sort of a deeper meaning into the story and I feel like they could have succeeded in creating a very beautiful deep piece on the ways to accept the death of a loved one should the book be not so short. Due to its shortness, however, the plot turned out to be mashed and strange. I wish the authors would come up with a longer version of this book.
In a short, sweet book we come to learn of Emily, a young girl who is barely able to make her mark on this world before being recalled to the Heavens. Emily and the Monster by Ruth Finnegan is told in the wispy-flowing style that we have come to expect from her. The story is concise indeed, and the impact of little Emily on her world is dearly felt. One thing to consider when reading anything by Finnegan is that the text will dart and weave. The narrator will demolish the fourth wall and will often interrupt and send your mind spinning. But if you follow the trail very carefully, you will be able to peer into its depths and grasp the meaning. Ruth Finnegan shows us how love can impact a person’s life, even if their place is small and short-lived in Emily and the Monster. While death may come calling, its not as scary as it might seem.
Emily and the Monster: The story of a little girl by Ruth Finnegan is a passionate and heartwarming story that narrates a journey of loss and grief. The book follows a little girl named Emily, who passes away. Throughout the book we learn how her death affects the ones who love her, as well as Emily herself. The story is educational and kind, making it a nice way for kids to learn about death and understand grieving.
Finnegan’s words make it a deeply emotional and touching story to help children understand death. She has a very compelling writing style, describing everything in a very sensitive way. While it may be a bit too much for younger kids since it covers an extremely sensitive topic, and certain scenes are a bit scary, older kids would definitely understand it better. It’s a great book of a journey towards the reunion of all our loved ones for kids and adults.
