Sara Bonnett Stein wrote books for children, some on sensitive subjects, such as divorce and death. She was also involved in toy design and native plant gardening, and wrote on ecology.
Sometimes I feel a bit sheepish requesting books for my four-year-old through interlibrary loan, but in this case, it was completely worth it. I'm sad my library system doesn't have this gem and that it's out of print now.
We start out with a piece of red paper, and talk about the things you could make with it—you could cut out a circle for an apple, then tear a bite out of it, etc. The tone is fairly Mr. Rogers–like, actually, which I liked. Then we move on to different colors and create different things, mostly food-related.
I just love how this book inspired my son's imagination. Of course it doesn't hurt that he loves to cut up paper.
I think every young child should OWN a copy of this book!
