Published annually since 1948, Accidents in North American Climbing reports on the year's most significant and educational climbing accidents. In each case, we analyze what went wrong, helping climbers prevent or survive similar situations in the future. The 2018 Know the Ropes section is dedicated to safer methods for traveling dangerous third- and fourth-class terrain, commonly found on 14ers and other high peaks, as well as approaches and descents from climbs. Danger Zones analyzes accidents on Mt. Hood in Oregon, helping climbers plan safer ascents of mountaineering routes. Essentials stories and other sidebars teach critical climbing and first-aid skills.
Always good to learn from the mistakes from others rather than experiencing them yourself. The American Alpine Clubs Accidents in North American Climbing list incidents by state with an analysis of how to prevent them in the future. The Danzer Zones sections are a good guide to climbing certain peaks safely. Shasta and Hood were profiled in this edition. The know the ropes: safer 4th class article seemed to lack the detail and instruction of previous year’s editions. Which is a shame. Scrambling on 4th class rock has recently lead to many injuries.
No doubt a must-read for mountaineers of all skill levels, given the unfortunate fact that errors and disasters can happen to those across the spectrum, as this book demonstrates. Mixed with personal accounts and objective summaries. Always tie a stopper knot.
