The Transvaal from Within a Private Record of Public Affairs

The Transvaal from Within A Private Record of Public Affairs: Large Print By Percy Fitzpatrick When, before resorting to extreme measures to obtain what the Uitlanders deemed to be their bare rights, the final appeal or declaration was made on Boxing Day, 1895, in the form of the manifesto published by the Chairman of the National Union, President Kruger, after an attentive consideration of the document as translated to him, remarked grimly: 'Their rights. Yes, they'll get them-over my dead body!' And volumes of explanation could not better illustrate the Boer attitude and policy towards the English-speaking immigrants. Sir James Percy FitzPatrick, KCMG, known as Percy FitzPatrick, was a South African author, politician, mining financier and pioneer of the fruit industry. He authored the classic children's book, Jock of the Bushveld (1907).

The Percy Fitzpatrick Institute of African Ornithology at the University of Cape Town was named in his honour.

Motor trails in the eastern part of South Africa follow the trails used by Fitzpatrick and Jock in their travels between the gold mines and the harbour at Delagoa Bay in Mozambique. The most well-known of these are those in the Kruger National Park.

A fascinating read of the events in the Transvaal leading up to and during the Jamieson Raid, written by one of the participants in the events. The writer is better known as Sir Percy FitzPatrick author of the children's classic 'Jock of the Bushveld'.

Although modern historians are giving Paul Kruger a positive gloss in true revisionist fashion, his government fares very badly in contemporary accounts. This book struggles hard to be fair minded and even handed but fails to exonerate this corrupt, inefficient regime which so angered the mining magnates of the Rand. However there is no doubt that the raid was disastrous in its planning and execution. From this account, the Johannesburg group tried to prevent the adventure, but Jamieson was under the control of the Cape administration, and was himself something of a loose cannon.
