Micah Reed has been pretending to be someone else for years. When a trap threatens to ruin his brother's family, Micah’s going to have to adopt a new persona, yet again. He’ll go deep undercover in a drug and alcohol treatment center to earn the trust of a dangerous man. A man who might be in possession of a lethal biological weapon. If Micah can’t get close enough to find out where it is and who this man is going to sell it to, thousands could perish during a horrific outbreak.
But it’s not just his target Micah has to worry about. In the opulent mansion of Cornerstone Treatment Center, everything appears to be flawless and picturesque. But malice lurks under the surface. People whisper that Micah may not be who he says he is. And if Micah’s secret identity unravels, his chance at stopping the biological agent and helping his brother will slip from his grasp.

Score another one for Jim Heskett and his character, Micah Reed! YAY!
Micah Reed was in the Witness Protection Program and removed himself, thinking he would fare better on his own. He is also a recovering alcoholic. He has a job working with his friend and AA sponsor, Frank, who is a bail bondsman.
Gavin, Micah’s “guide” while he was in the Witness Protection Program, has a big job for Micah and Frank. Micah wants nothing to do with it. Gavin is one of the reasons Micah left the program but when Gavin tells him that Micah’s brother is going to lose about everything he owns unless Micah helps out with this investigation, Micah sees no options but to do as he says.
Micah ends up in an upper-crust alcohol and drug treatment house back in his home state of Oklahoma where he is to befriend a guy named Snoop, is part of another drug cartel and is believed to either possess or know where a vial containing the small pox virus is. It is to be sold to a foreign country.
The story leads to the usual suspects but don’t let your guard down. There are twists and turns in the plot that keep the story moving at a quick pace.
I really do have a thing for Micah Reed. He’s the most humble tough guy you will ever love. He doesn’t look like a tough guy, doesn’t act like it, and he’s the last person you would think would be involved with anything nefarious. There was a part in the story that made me cry because I felt his loneliness just screaming from the reader.
The story was intriguing, the plot was tight with twists, and the writing was excellent, earning it an easy five-star rating.
Sometimes when reading a book, the author puts a line or two in the story that is worth remembering. In this case, it is, “But it’s okay to be scared. Just don’t let the fear tell you what to do. Courage isn’t lack of fear. It’s not letting fear dictate your actions.” ~Frank Mueller

on Once again Jim takes us on another Micah Reed adventure. Micah's old handler and his boss get him involved in another exciting glimpse into the world of mystery & intrigue. No spoilers here but suffice it to say that if you are not reading the Micah Reed series you are truly missing out on done great fiction ! As usual this was another page turner that I absolutely could not put down.
Stone Deep see’s Micah Reed risking his anonymity, his freedom and possibly even his life when a voice from the past asks for help. Checking into an exclusive rehab retreat pretending to be a newly sober alcoholic Micah needs to befriend a tough gangster to stop him from…. Well you’ll need to read it to find out but it’s tense and it’s hugely entertaining. Micah is under constant stress throughout as he faces having his real identity discovered. Add to that the fact there are threats all around from various people for a variety of reasons and Micah’s in deep trouble. Again Jim Heskett has dropped a thrill ride of a novel into our hands that grabs hold and doesn’t let go until the thrilling finale. Great addition to an enthralling series.
The more I read Micah Reed Series the more I like him. Yes, he was a not so nice guy in the past. I find him trying to do the right thing cool. I figured out who the hand off was going to early. That's okay, I keep reading to see if I'm right. I didn't like how someone from Micah's past manipulated him into helping him. That was not cool. I find Micah's loyalty and love for his family honorable. There were some slow moving parts, but overall I enjoyed Stone Deep. Jim Heskett keeps you guessing and turning the pages. I read on Kindle Unlimited.
Micah is asked to help locate a small pox virus that was stolen from the Serbians and is to be passed on by a gang. One of the members, Snoop, is currently undergoing rehab at a resort and perhaps Micah can find out from him where the virus is. Micah goes undercover pretending to be newly sober rather than a year plus. This story interweaves the FBI, witness protection, gang warfare (minor), stabbing with scissors, police, a suspicious psychiatrist, woods where things may (or may not) be buried and personal interactions to make an interesting tale.
As is usual for Mr. Heskett this book is a treat to read. It has great writing and the story flows well, a pleasure to read. The action was going to go in one direction, I thought, but went in another. With the misdirection the author used my preconceived ideas provided wrong, thankfully, since the end result is more and better that way. When a sinister plot is afoot you need a principal character like Micah that can see a better future and guide his friend in a different direction that benefits that friend.
Another great Micah Reed story. Micah goes to rehab to stop the sale a bioweapon while Gavin an Frank work on the outside to track own the buyers in a thriller that more than lived up to my expectations for Jim Heskett's work. The supporting characters are edgy and interesting, the plot twists kept me wondering who was into what right through till the closing chapters and the storytelling is tight and well crafted without any fluff and filler. This one works as a stand alone although you're missing a great experience if you don't read the whole series.
Heskett' s Micah Reed books are getting better with each book. Just finished #5 Stone Deep and I think it was the best one so far. I like how he brings in the new characters and they are vibrant without being over powering. This one kept me guessing to who the hand off of the .... (no giveaways here) was going to be and it was someone that I didn't figure. Nice job. Keep up the good work. One more to go then I think the Micah series is finished. Cheers Lynn
I'm hooked! I read this book in a matter of hours. I'm a character reader, I get into what makes a character tick, who they are, why they do the things they do. In this book, Heskett's best work to date, he continues to expand the character of Micah Reed. The story line is a roller coaster, thrill a minute, can't put down read! I'll be reading more by this author!
Clean for 14 months, now doing a 28 day program, WTF.
This makes 5 Micah Reed books I've read so yes I obviously like the series. This one is less a thriller and more a suspense book than others and frankly I liked that. Jim has crafted a good protagonist in Micah one who really wants to do good is not sure how to go about it. But he's learning.
Another great read!! Started out a little different and had me wondering. But Heskett did not disappoint--just showed yet another aspect to his talent of building a thrilling page-turner!

Stone Deep, the fifth book in the Micah Reed series, is another excellent installment in the continuing life of formerly-known-as Michael McBryer (due to entering the witness protection program). Micah is “asked” (more like blackmailed to protect his brother and his brother’s family) to enter a rehab center undercover to recover a strain of super-smallpox that is to be sold by one of the patients entering the rehab center to person or persons unknown.
Sure, no problem. Throw in some Serbians and a Mexican drug cartel worse than the one Micah used to be in (hence, witness protection), and everything gets so much more fun.
At The Stone (the rehab center), Micah encounters all kinds of characters, like Nash his sketchy roommate, the flirtatious Leighton, the also-flirtatious Chelsea, and the smallpox-related Snoop. There’s nurse Oscar (always making veiled comments), Counselor Dryden (who suspects Micah is hiding something), and Director Rhonda (who has stuff to hide).
The book is exciting to read. We get a true sense of the urgency Micah feels to figure out what’s going on with Snoop and the smallpox as the days tick by. Realistically but inappropriately, Micah has taken on the responsibility of saving his brother from a terrible business deal. I’ve never been in a rehab treatment center, but this seems to paint a pretty accurate picture of what I understand of them.
And now that Micah has over a year of sobriety under his belt and able to focus on things, he’s turning into a decent detective. His work as a skip-tracer with Frank has helped him in this area, too. I really like that over the series of books, Micah has gone from a character in a book to a (fictional) real character. This could reflect his continuing road along sobriety.
I highly recommend this book and this series, but start at the beginning with Nailgun Messiah. The books are all standalone, but you’ll enjoy it more in order.

'Stone Deep (Micah Reed Series)' completely blew me away. The storyline was well written and the way it played out was very unexpected. I loved the twists. Full of action, suspense, mystery and some very interesting characters. Micah found himself, yet again, in a situation that pushed him to his limits and tested him at every turn. I love his outlook and his ability to turn obstacles into opportunities. Frank is such a great motivator. I like his caring demeanor and his willingness to help keep Micah on the straight path. I look forward to reading more of this series. A great add to your tbr list.
I think this is the best Micah Reed book I've read so far. The setting is 28 days in a rehab center where Micah is under cover, his task is to find the person in rehab selling a biological weapon. Well written, lots of action and intrigue, twists and turns, this is my kind of book. Kudos to Jim Heskett for a job very well done! I received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review
