Origins of Mid-Saxon Southampton: Excavations at the Friends Provident St Mary's Stadium 1998-2000

Rate this book
This report publishes the results of the largest excavations yet undertaken within mid-Saxon Hamwic. The known settlement area has been increased to c. 50 hectares, a mixed rite cemetery was uncovered dating to the mid-7th century. In the later 7th century further burials were made, a high proportion of which were accompanied by sometime complex assemblages of weaponry. The burials may represent an elite group associated with a royal estate and compare closely with burials found in east Kent.
