Once a loving family torn apart by the death of her mother, Aoife struggles to understand her father and her place in his life.
To save her kingdom from outside forces that threatens the peace her people have, her father, the king, arranges a marriage to a prince she has never met. Guards sent by her betrothed to watch over her, to her surprise she finds friendship, and possibly love, in her protectors.
Torn between the love she wants and the marriage that is expected of her, Aoife must decide whether to conform to her father wishes or to trust in the plans she has for her own life.
A tale about a princess learning that sacrifices are necessary to become a queen.
This was a really lovely read about love, loss, and friendship. I loved the friendship between Aoife and Maeve and I loved the banter between them and Liam and Malcolm. I liked the glimpses of political strife we got in several scenes because it made the world feel large and lived-in. It was great seeing Aoife change from being a passive character in her own destiny to being determined to learn to be a better queen, to learn to fight, and to ultimately get what she wants out of life. I liked the red riding hood motifs and the overall atmosphere of the story. I was also super relieved that we got catharsis at the end of the book between Aoife and her father, once she realizes that the king really did care about her feelings. I love bittersweet endings and this one hit all the right notes. Really really well done!
