The book's publishing date is 1985, 26 years ago. We inherited books from a deceased former neighbor, and I put aside this book to read as Moody Church has personal meaning to me.
The book covers the history and biography of D.L.Moody, an evangelist who influenced cities, especially Chicago, here and overseas, and the building of the current Moody Church and Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. Since we had two children graduate from MBI in Moody Church,
we were inside that beautiful building. This book gave the background of the architecture, which was a Romanesque cathedral in Italy.
The pastors of the church, and assistant pastors, through the years were given separate chapters, with four sermons by four different pastors at the end of the book. I was delighted to read about familiar names, and one pastor, who was assistant pastor of Moody, went on to be the pastor for many years at my parents' church.
The story of Moody Church goes on to this day with Erwin Lutzer still the pastor, the last one written about in the book. The church has a vibrant ministry in the heart of Chicago, a church started by an itinerant evangelist with a beard in the mid 1800's who also, incidentally, started YMCA and Sunday schools for the working children of Chicago, and had a special visit from Abraham Lincoln on his way to his first inauguration.
