«Інститутка» — це твір, який розповідає не лише про гіркоту існування закріпачених селян, але й про початок наростання їхнього протесту проти існуючого ладу та соціальної несправедливості.
Письменник порушив не тільки проблеми побуту кріпаків, але й більш вагому проблему — соціальний протест селян та їхнє бажання звільнитися, змінити своє життя на краще.
Marko Vovchok was a pseudonym of a famous Russian and Ukrainian writer. Vovchok contributed to Russian literature by publishing works in the Russian language and to Ukrainian literature by publishing works in Ukrainian langauge.
While there is a broad consensus about the authorship of the Russian language works published under pseudonym Marko Vovchok (it was Mariya Lobach-Chuzhenko, also known as Mariya Markovytch during her first marriage and by her maiden name Mariya Vilinskaya, 1833 – 1907), to this day there is no consensus among literary historians as to the authorship of the Ukrainian language works published under this pseudonym: today most modern scholars believe that Vilinskaya's first husband, a Ukrainian folklorist and writer Opanas Markovytch (1822 - 1867), was likely either the sole author of Ukrainian language works of Marko Vovchok or at the very least the co-author of those works).

ІнституткаAfter Finishing School, one of the earliest Ukrainian ‘social novels’ about a hard fate of serf women. It is told from POV of one of the serf women and starts with the coming of a granddaughter of her current mistress, who just finished school. This young mistress thinks that all serfs are lazy and should be constantly punished. The story continues with her marriage to a local doctor, a mild man, whom she also ‘trains’ not to speak with serfs s equals, etc. КармелюкKarmelyuk a version of local Robin Hood story, told from POV of his mother and wife КозачкаKozak’s daughter here a bit of context first: serfdom was much strengthened on Ukrainian lands by Catherine II after 1783 and kozaks, who were closer to a gentry were often turned to serfs, one of the ways is if a free person marries a serf, s/he becomes a serf too. Olesya was the only daughter of an old kozak. She fell in love and married a serf (despite people in her village trying to stop her). Later her husband was taken by their master to a city where he died. Her older sons were also taken from her, she was left in poverty with the youngest. Не до париNot a good pair a story of an orphan girl, told by her aunt, who grew her. The girl married a melancholic man, who saw futility in everything so that they slowly lost all they had. Павло ЧорнокрилPavlo Chornokryl another melancholic tragic man, who married a woman, who tried to uplift his moods, for she loved him so, but who fell in love with another serf girl, for she was as tragic as he. There are no divorces, so till death should us part should be quickened ПройдисвітRogue a girl fells in love with a hired worker, but the difference in their social levels is a serious impediment for their happiness СестраSister siblings, a brother and a sister grew up together, both grew up and married. Two of them, one outgoing brave one and another a shy one fell in love with the same guy. To make matters worse, he was in love with yet another woman, do didn’t want him
Overall all works are quite sad and full of romantic love, but not happy endings. The prose is fluid, close to the vernacular of rural Ukraine of the period
