Five hundred years ago, war struck, laying the world in ruins. The world was rebuilt into a tyrannical nine-nation society where emotions are outlawed. At birth, the Council infuses each citizen with an antidote that makes them emotionless. Immunity to the antidote spells death.
To reduce the population, each year the Council gathers citizens from all nine nations aged eighteen and seventy. While those aged seventy are eliminated, the Council administers aptitude and fitness tests to the eighteen year olds, and scoring below the cutoff is an automatic death sentence.
Astra comes from the most indigent nation, and unknown to the Council, she is a Deviant—one of the few who are immune to the antidote. She aces the tests and is deployed to an affluent nation to serve as a scientist. But on the day she is to marry a man given to her by the government, she learns of her sister's death sentence and must journey to the wastelands to save her.
Ryker was born into the most affluent nation. But when he scores below the cutoff, he knows he's scheduled for elimination. And worse, he's a Deviant. On the run from the Council, he heads for the wastelands where a group of Deviants are rumored to live.
He crosses paths with Astra and they awaken a love forbidden by their society. But there's one problem. Astra is supposed to marry Orion his elder brother.
Together, they join the Rebellion—a group of Deviants planning to stop the global tyranny—even though it means placing their lives on the line.

If you've read Divergent then the word plagiarism will come to mind. Even the title suggests it. Worse this tome is poorly edited.
