In 1775 Prudence Ainsworth is to be married to Oliver Duke. Revolutionary War erupts.
I enjoy historical novels, especially of the American Revolution. The sense of danger, the call of change, and the tension of that time, all played a tune of Yankee Doodle. I felt transported back to that time. My favorite line, "I kissed the wind, hoping it found it's way to you." Christian characters struggling in their faith. The question surfaced: Will they survive the conflicts? Will they trust Providence for their dreams? Such a great read, one I loved. I'm onto more of Robin's books.
Today’s casual reader may find it difficult to understand the 18th century mindset and language that come into play in this book. It’s reminiscent of the Brontë sisters but much easier for a modern reader to navigate.
The author took on a great challenge with matching the plot to the scope of the Revolutionary War. Because of the long timeline, there were large gaps in the action, which threatened the cohesive feel of the narrative.
This is the first book I've read by this author. The story is rather touching and sweet. Romance for sure. Historical, yes. Fight for independence from Britain, yes. Steeped with Jesus and keeping one's mind to the positive? Perfect.
