Feeling and Ugly is a collection of short stories and it carries a set of standpoints, or willfulness and pedagogy, politics and optimism. And while Mupotsa carries an attachment to a no reparative, or negative affect across the collection, she closes in describing the work, or all of her work, as love poems. This collection is a long love letter to those who are willful.
Pain seeps all over Danai Mupotsa's debut poetry collection, feeling and ugly. The short and sparse poems delve into the heart of sexual oppression and mistreatment. They are confessional and lyrical, bold and promising.
When I read the words in this collection of poetry, I was reminded of the words of the Kween mother Audre Lorde, when she writes ‘What are the words you do not yet have? What do you need to say? What are the tyrannies you swallow day by day and attempt to make your own, until you will sicken and die of them, still in silence.’ Danai’s poetry is urgent in unearthing the many walls of silence that plague us. Her collection of poetry ranges from a variety of topics. I believe each person can find themselves in this work. It is a work that hasn’t yet come. A work of radical healing. I would recommend this over and over.
