Locker Room Love #2

Defending the Net

Rate this book
Two hot-shot hockey players are about to clash in Genevive Chamblee’s sexy M/M romance Defending the Net.

Brighton Rabalais only wants to play hockey. He’s uninterested in the politics behind the sport, but his recruiting to the Saint Anne’s Civets is as much about politics as it is his hockey abilities. He’s been hired to replace the enigmatic, three-time champion, veteran goalie, Gatien Glesseau, who happens to be as sexy as he is talented.

Their clashing is inevitable, but Brighton can’t get a read on Gatien. However, with his own secrets a concern, Brighton doesn’t need another complication. But when Gatien threatens to invade Brighton’s privacy, Brighton defends his heart with the same vigor and passion as he does the net.

Hockey romances definitely have a special flair, considering that it’s a tough team sport and its players are “the machoest of the macho”. Well, pretty much – at the very least that is how they like to see themselves. In this second book of the ‘Locker Room Love’ series the two goalies of the Saint Anne Civets, one “old” and one newly recruited, have to figure out how to make things work. With the natural rivalry between established team member Gatien and newcomer Brighton you might think this cannot end well… but you’d be mistaken. In fact, calling their relationship insta is an understatement! You’ll have to read this passion-filled novella to believe it.

I read this because I'm a completist and tend to like finishing series. Same issues as with the first book plus tons of unresolved stuff at the end.

4 Star Review Defending The Net by Genevive Chamblee

Genevive Chamblee is a new author to me and I have no idea why that is. Defending The Net is a M/M story that was well written and engaging. The writing is strong and when time permits I will be looking to read other books by this author.

This is the story of Brighton Rabalais and the man he has been hired to replace Gatien Glesseau. What could be better than two hot as sin hockey players who clash on and off the ice?

I love hockey stories and the fact that this is also a M/M story is a total win in my opinion. Brighton has no interest in focusing on anything other than playing hockey and the very last thing he wants or needs is to be attracted to Gatien, particularly as he has been hired to replace him.

However fate works in mysterious ways and the chemistry between Brighton and Gatien is off the charts, so hot you can almost see the ice melting.

Will Gatien break down the walls that Brighton has erected or will the secrets that Brighton hold destroy them before they can begin? One click and find out.

If you’re looking for easy and relaxing read then this could be one for you. I was interested to see where thing would go for Brighton and Gatien. This one had a bit more to it than the first book in the series, so I’ll give the rest of the series a go to see if they improve as they go along; mainly because I love a good sports romance.

In view of the publishing of Penalty Kill, the 4th book of the series, I decided to binge read the first three stories, of which I received ARC copies.

Genevieve Chamblee is a new author to me and I found her writing style interesting and slightly out of the more mainstream and successful MM novels.

The first three stories are written from only one POV, but thanks to well written dialogues, the intentions, feelings, and thoughts of the second MC are easily intelligible.

Furthermore, the author picks up the MCs at a specific moment in their life, where they already know each other but something happens that causes their connection to change. The romance level is pretty low and the MCs first intercourse almost always feels like a hook up rather than part of a developing love relationship (except in the third book Ice Gladiators).

The background world of hockey is not described as this shiny environment where everybody on the team is like a family. On the contrary: in each book there is always a moment of disclosure of slimy, corrupt, and disdainful behavior by friends, managers and other affiliates that serves the purpose of further highlighting the good of the love interest of the MC.

At the end all books’ ends tend to the HFN because the author does not indulge in carrying on with the story once the MCs have declared their feelings and set the first cornerstones of an hopefully happy future.

This specific book has the element of the older/experienced goalie vs the young/talented rookie that usually is a good start. But in this case the lose ends of the different issues raised during the story at the end are just too much and leave the reader unsatisfied.

Overall these books were entertaining, although at times pretty cynical, short reads.

Genevieve Chamblee is a new author to me but after reading Defending the Net I’m struggling to see why she hasn’t crossed my radar before now, you see this book is everything I love it’s a great hockey story and it’s M/M. This is Brighton and Gatien story and starts off with Brighton Rabalais being recruited for the Saint Anne’s Civets as the replacement for veteran goalie Gatien Glesseau, all Brighton wants to do is to play hockey he doesn’t want to get involin the politics of the game but that’s seems unavoidable with an uncle on the board of the team. The attraction between Brighton and Gatien is instant but will they be able to get past Brighton taking the job Gatien loves and will the secrets Brighton is hiding be the stumbling block......
I certainly will be looking at other books by this author as I really enjoyed her style of writing, the characters were strong, the chemistry sizzling and the storyline kept me interested. Great read.

Brighton is brought in as a replacement for Gatien, the longstanding goalie for the Saint Ann Civets. All he cares about is that he gets to play hockey, sure he feels bad that he is going to replace Gatien, but it's not up to him. But after joining Gatien for a meal, one he sort of stumbled in on, he is seeing Gatien with new eyes. When Brighton ends up needing a bit of a caretaker for a week, Gatien ends up being the one that comes to his rescue. The two end up letting their attraction get the better of them. For Brighton he would love for this to be something more, but is it for Gatien, or is this just a passing fling?

So, TBH this doesn't have much to do with hockey at all. With loads of drama, this was a bit of a choppy story, that did have some depth to it, but in the end it just ends. There was so much going on in this book for it to just... end. I feel a bit let down. I give this 3.5 stars.

This story has so many points of potential conflict that it’s hard to follow them all. Brighton is a young goalie who’s attracted to the man he’s potentially going to replace-- plus family intrigue, a mysterious injury, a complicated medical history, a roommate who exploits him, and parents who don’t want to admit that he’s gay-- all things that come up over the course of the narrative, few of which are resolved by the time the story abruptly ends. It’s hard to get into without spoilers, but really, we get a whisper of hope that things will turn out maybe ok for Brighton and Gatien. Since it’s an immersive read (I couldn’t put it down, I desperately wanted to know what would happen next) and since Brighton is a really likeable character, I’m giving it 4 stars, but don’t go into this looking for all the loose ends to be tied up or anything vaguely resembling a solid HEA: treat this like a vignette, rather than a fully fledged narrative, and it’ll more than deliver.

Overall a well written story

Okay.. so.. I loveeeee M/M romance but I especially love M/M sports romance, so with that being said I saw the first book in this series and I had to read it and then of course I wanted to read the second one which is this book but with this book I felt like the story was a bit rushed and the ending could have been done differently maybe given us (the readers) a bit more… I don’t know. I was really looking forward to reading this book and overall the writing was good but the way the story unfolded didn’t fully grab me fully. BUT that is my thoughts and opinions. I am in NO way shape or form bashing this book because I can appreciate the time and effort that this author put into her book and just because it wasn’t my cup of coffee doesn’t mean it can’t be yours… so i say read the book and then let me know your own thoughts and opinions on it because they are probably different from my own. Happy Reading

Brighton Rabalais had been recruited by Sanit Annes Civets he has complications..
The goal keeper he will replace is Gatien Glesseau a skilled keeper...
Brighton doesn't think he needs help in anything he is complexly stubborn even more so with Gatien..

Brighton struggles with what is happening in his life Gatien offers to help they find themselves wanting each other ...
Life gets in the way for both and family isn't always as good as it seems..
Their are stories to be told to each other..
Can the come to an understanding ?
I certainly enjoyed this book I would have liked the story to have carried on but it left me with a satisfying feeling..
First time I have read this author and I will certainly continue reading her books..

The two goalies - the newbie and the veteran.

Brighton is brought on to the team as Gatien's negotiations with the team have stalled. Brighton has overcome so much to get to this point in his career. Gatien is the quiet reserved type who doesn't give a lot away about himself.

Their connection starts from a basis of mistrust before building into a friendship. They battle their growing attraction for each other but give in. Their sexual experiences vary considerably.

There was lots going on with Brighton's roommate, his illness, his Uncle and the contract negotiations. Whilst these two confronted their feelings for each other, the ending fell a little flat for me. It ended with too much unresolved for me.

This book, the second in the series, sets a tenured goalie against a rookie goalie recently hired on the team. Lots of complications for the characters to muddle through, and some surprises. This book introduces the fact that there’s an underlying plot that will be explored through the series – one bad guy appears again, and we see a bit more of what’s happening.

The two characters were actually pretty funny together. I wouldn’t say it’s a grumpy/sunshine trope, but more grumpy/grumpy, but somehow the two work together once they get the “is he” questions out of the way. Of course, they run into some hurdles and miscommunications that threaten to derail their budding relationship, but they do get their hinted-at HEA.

This book was a little light on the actual hockey part.

Defending the Net is the first book by Genevieve Chamblee that I have read. I love hockey romance books and M/M romance stories and this book brings the best of both worlds!
Brighton is a new goalie brought in the team and Gatien is the current goalie and a player that Brighton has admired so never did he think that he would be attracted to one of his idols. Brighton has been trying to figure out if he is reading Gatien’s signals wrong but it seems their attraction to each other is mutual. The conflict comes with him being brought to the team to replace Gatien, but he just wants to play the game, not the politics.
It was an enjoyable read and I would consider reading her again.

This is book 2 of A Locker Room Love Novel. In the footnote at the end the author states this is a standalone which does explain some questions yet raises others. This book also ends quite abruptly and where I thought we would read of an ending for Christofe and Aidan from book 1, it is not to be. A bit sad really.
However this is about Brighton and Gatien. No on page hockey games, but some twists at the end.
Although I would prefer more to the ending, I am not disappointed in the writing style of Genevive Chamblee and will continue to read her books.
I received a copy from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review.

The mysteries from the first book continue into this one but we have a new couple here in Brighton and Gatien. These two strike sparks because they have been placed on the same hockey team in competition for the same position. One a new younger player and the other an older veteran. As they "investigate" each other trying to gain advantage on the team, they find they have an attraction that neither would have believed. Again, more an HFN than an HEA, but the characters in the first two book have been interesting enough and different from book to book that I will continue reading the series.

I enjoy M/M books, especially sports stories and I really liked this one but I feel like I only read half the story, I wanted more Gatien and Brighton! I bonded with Brighton, he definitely deserved a HEA but Gatien put him in a bad spot when the truth came out. Gatien wasn't happy with his life or how his contract negotiations were going and knowing that Brighton was on the team as a replacement didn't sit well with him but he can't deny how drawn he is to the new guy. Brighton and Gatien have some bumps along the way but they were made for each other! Thanks BMBB for the ARC!

A sports romance with M/M action yes please! My first read by this author and it did not disappoint. Love the tension between Gatien and Brighton which boils to a heat level that sizzles. Brighton is afraid to steps on toes as he is recruited by the team as a back up for Gatineau, Gatineau knows it’s more than that and add in the attraction makes for a fast, hot romance. This was overall an enjoyable read the only issue I had was the fast ending that made me want more of these gorgeous couple.

Way too short with lots of major plot points left unfinished. I could handle it in the first book since those point wouldn’t really effect the relationship, but these plot points are MAJOR problems for the relationship.

Also I’m usually not a huge stickler for medical accuracy but this seemed wildly out of reality.

I think this book could have been 5 stars the characters had lots of potential, there was lots of drama that could have played out, and some really cool twists that needed to be expanded upon.

So yeah. I liked this one less than the first. So much more needed to be done. The angst was right there! Plus again, no ice time. The blackmail, so much could have been done with that. Then they mess around and the big misunderstanding and then an explanation and the book is over. I liked the MCs just fine, but I need then on the ice battling for the position.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest opinion.

Good plot, characters had substance, complications, humour and a return character as an underlying theme, Gatien and Brighton I loved together, at times frustrating but also hot and I felt the ending was a little abrupt. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book for my honest opinions of which I’m under no obligation to do so. I definitely recommend this story.

I read the first one and felt a little let down that they weren’t any ice time in the storyline, its supposed to be a hockey romance. There wasn’t any in this one either. Although there is a mystery of sorts and lots of drama going on. I didn’t like how Brighton and Gatien’s story ended, it just ended. I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.

This is a new author to me, but I will certainly be looking out for her work in the future. Brighton has been recruited by another team, and the goalkeeper he is to replace is Gatien, which is a complication, as these two are drawn to each other. This is a well written story, which had me hooked and intrigued throughout, and I recommend for all readers.

More Going On Behind The Scenes.

MM, Sports based, Romance, easy to read, likeable characters, intense story with lots going on but again as with book 1 there is no conclusion. I'm still hopeful that at the end of the series I will feel like I've read the characters complete stories. Overall enjoyed but feel left wanting more details.

Like the first book, this one is full of complications. There is more hockey politics mentioned that I had no idea that it was that way. This book and the first one have a ton of potential. But overall I did enjoy this book and will finish the series. I want a HEA.. Not another cliff hanger....

I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Several plotlines left unresolved - in all three books of the series (I kept reading just thinking, hoping the loose ends would eventually be tied, but they never were). Another ok story that could have been so much better, and ended abruptly.

Give me more hockey

The second book in the series, there isn’t as much hockey in this one. While there are references here and there I think if you are going to refer to a book as a sports romance then it should have some sports in it.
