Who Do You See When You Look at Me? (Hardcover) – Inspirational Books for Kids, Teaches Lessons of Disability Awareness, Kindness and Acceptance, Perfect Gift for Birthdays, Holiday & More
Although she might seem different, she is a happy girl with much to share. Are you more like her than you thought you would be?
Though she lives with the daily challenges of disability, Grace Anna is a typical kid with big dreams. With imaginative text and charming illustrations, this inspirational kid’s book teaches children to let go of first impressions and see themselves and others for who they really are.
I am a native of Liberty, Kentucky. I am happily married to my husband, Jeff, and mom to two wonderful children, Isaiah and Grace Anna. After Grace Anna's birth, my plans drastically changed, I went from being a veteran science teacher to an advocate for my daughter. I continue to advocate for all children with disabilities as well as being involved in charities for our veterans. Watching my daughter live in joy while facing incredible obstacles in life has changed the woman I have become. Life is so much better when you live in joy. I live daily relying on God to guide my path to be the best person I can be.
I just got this book yesterday, and read it as soon as it was out of its packaging. OK, disclaimer: this isn't going to be an unbiased review. I know the family, have met them, and their daughter has the same form of dwarfism I have (albeit more severe). That said, yes, I loved this book. I think it would be a great addition to a school library. I can see parents reading this to their three-year-olds and younger elementary school students, and older students reading this independently. It's a positive look at a child with different needs, but it emphasizes the similarities Grace Anna has with her other peers. The book does not shy away from the realities: there is one page which shows Grace Anna waiting for tests in a hospital bed- a part of her life. But all in all, this is an upbeat and positive story, that highlights abilities and talents rather than problems.
